I had "similar" issue from 6.5K rpm when the 6port were completely closed. Are they opening?

It needs to breath - IE:
Dual sxhaust header to silencers to bombs.
Cold air ram intake.

Also check the operation of the Aux intake ports.

what icemark said... however i was going to suggest the AFM... when mine crapped out i hit a brick wall at 4k rpm's.... think of it this way, if the AFM is stuck at 1/2 way then you will be fine until you reach the rpm where the afm flapper door needs to be open more, when you reach that point the engine will then suffocate, bog from running so rich and hit a brick wall

Hey,
I have a similar problem with my 89. The engine could be operating in the limp mode. Does the engine light come on? If so it could be the oil metering pump.

Limp mode is considerbly lower than 7K rpm
