Breakdown Procedures Pt 1.

Well guys I had a question for you guys....I finally found a damn 54mm Socket to fit that EVIL Lucifer sized nut Mazda decided to put on our flywheel. Heres my question....Is it necessary to have a flywheel puller (T puller) to remove the flywheel once you have the 54mm nut off or can you knock it off with a rubber mallet or anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Obviously a T Puller would be the easier way (as shown on my video) but everywhere I go to get one all stores carry small ones that wont fit our flywheel. I was just wondering if anyone has got the flywheel off without one. And also is there any tool that can remove a Pilot bearing besides the one on Mazdatrix Website for $111. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Mike

I bought a stock flywheel puller from RB, pilot bearing tool from Mazdatrix. Those tools were great help for me. I also rented impact wrench. It was just 5 sec to remove 54mm nuts, maybe 10 or 15 min to remove stock flywheel. 3 min to remove pilot bearing.

Most of the stock type pullers are too narrow for the 2 bolt holes on the flywheel. I adapted mine by adding a piece of angle to the puller, thus allowing for the wider bolt spread.

A puller makes the job much easier, and prevents damage to the front thrust bearings, by not beating on the flywheel.

Talking

put a large prybar on either side of the flywheel and put even amounts of tension on them now hit the e- shaft with a hammer and POP!!! mine came off in about 2 mins just dont hit the threads it's a good idea to keep the nut on there to prevent this

if that doesnt work than make some kind of contraption like i did i used steel building iron

You go to autozone and rent their puller and their slide hammer.

Then you grind down the puller until it fits inside your shaft. Attach the slide hammer and it should pop out with no problems.

Hmmm. I've been hearing people having problems with getting their flywheels off after the nut is off but I never did. I used a rubber mallet and just smacked the edges of it a bunch and it slid right off.

OMG did you even read what I posted

You can go to Autozone and rent a pilot bearing puller.....

RENT so when you are done it didn't cost you a penny.

Or you can buy the mazdatrix one for $100 what ever it is.

The Sears here only carries up to a 36mm Socket. I met a guy that works with a big tool company and he got me a 54mm Socket. But yeah Sears and all auto parts stores were a dead end.

You sure Sears doesn't have it? I saw it there in their tools, it was like 20 or 30 bucks I think. I got mine off ebay, though.

Sears doesn't have it in metric, but 2 1/8 standard is the same size:

Have you tried a hammer? Place a pry bar behind the flywheel and pry out (or have a helper do it). Get a small piece of wood, and place it on the friction surface of the flywheel. Not get a MANS HAMMER (at leat 10 LB) and whack the wood. I guarantee it will pop off after the 1st blow.

Make sure to leave the flywheel nut on, to prevent the flywheel from landing on your toes.
