One thing the Haynes manual does not mention, and it should, the low pressure filter, (sock) at the bottom of the fuel pump MUST be changed when you buy an FC. If your main filter was clogged, then so should your low pressure filter.
I had a lot of hesitation and stuttering until I was advised by a member here to fit a new one. I did and it was night and day. I tried to clean out the old filter basket, could not do so, in fact after being washed out in hot soapy water, the basket held gasoline when held up. The pores were totally clogged with something, I could not see it. I bought 2 for $12.00 each, one for a spare. Some of these FC parts are getting hard to find, good to have an extra.
You have to pull the fuel pump out of the tank from inside the trunk in a vert.
I have an 88 Vert too, when funds permit, I'll install a S4 TII motor. I love the car, one of the prettiest on the road, I'm told.

If all the bolts are out, I suggest grabbing the upper plenum and wiggling it loose with some hard jerks in between. You'll probably need someone else to grab the other side. It's a little heavy and it is awkward to get to.
im stuck cause of the large vacuum hose on the back side. its at the top/back and just wont come off. damnitdamnit

snag snag snag

so i got the PD changed out. car starts up fine, hits 3k like it should, runs for a second then dies. I wonder if the fuel injectors are messed up, I was not as gentle with the secondary ones as i should have been. I have the vacuum hoses set right i'm sure cause i labeled them all.

Take a wire or a paper clip and put both end into the yellow socket that hangs just below the map sensor on the passenger side.

If that doesn't fix it, your afm may need replacing.

my mechanic flaked out on me AGAIN, I've been blown off for 2 weeks and it is REALLY aggravating. I don't have a trailer or a vehicle to tow it to boise idaho so if anyone has any bright ideas - i'm open to suggestion. The issue is the intake plenum, and 3 vacuum hoses need to be replaced. I just don't have the skills to be able to get the VDI off and replace those items. I have the bolts out but thats as far as my skill set gets me. so lame.

The VDI is off! I am going to scrape the gasket today, put in the new one and put it all back together.

One question though - can someone post a pic of where this vac valve goes? I sorta remember, but its been 3 weeks since it broke off and i cant remember.

a color pic is easier than the drawings in the FSM...lol

Stuff the LIM intake holes with rags first, then spray the gasket with CRC gasket remover or the equivalent. *much* easier that way. Mazdatrix recommends sanding with #300 paper, I used #220, worked great. I put Permatex #2 on both mating surfaces and both sides of the new gasket; no vacuum leaks.

That looks like the delay valve. It goes in line in a vac line that comes from the thermovalve on the back side of the throttle body, comes forward *under* the intake elbow, and then up to the double throttle diaphram on the front side of the throttle body.

Make sure that you dont get the lines going to the thermovalve mixed up. If you reverse them, you will create a large vacuum leak. Not that you wont know, its hiss is can be heard over the engine.

The delay valve should be tested per the FSM procedure.

Also test the double throttle diaphram per the FSM procedure. Most of them have perforated diaphrams by this age, and that will 1) cause the double throttle diaphram not to operate, and 2) create another vacuum leak, though only while the engine is cold.

Thanks for the great info!

I got the gasket all scraped off and nicked the metal in only a couple of places. nothing huge, no large gouges or anything. I will get sandpaper and clean it up and get some Permatex also and put it on there, including filling the little cuts i made.

rookie mistake - but hey - i'm trying
