Question Boost Level Question.....

Ok, finally got a boost controller for my car, and Im curious what kinda boost I should run (psi wise).

It's an 89 with 82k miles...pretty much babied since I had it, always used turbo timer to let cool down, etc....

I have the FCD and Boost Controller, and have done homework but, nothing is as good as info from other people who have done it themseleves.

How much boost should I run safely? I hear 10-12psi on the stock turbo/fuel system... is that accurate? I don't notice any hesitation in the car, pulls strong (clutch is crap but being replaced as soon as I get time to install).

I don't expect to get major gains out of a ~3psi jump but a little more pull is always nice I'll be upgrading the fuel/turbo after this summer, and preparing for a rebuild possibly just incase

Tips from people running higher than stock boost on stock fuel/turbo? Pretty basic but I would like to make sure I didn't miss anything....since I don't personally know any other 2g RX-7 owners here.

Thanks in advance...
- Jason

Re: Boost Level Question.....

10psi should be just fine. 12psi might be starting to push it IMO (others will argue), mainly because intakes temps start to rise out of proprtion with power. You will notice quite a difference going from 7 to 10psi, but the biggest gains won't be top end but in the mid-range. This is because the EBC will hold the wastegate closed until just before max boost resulting the turbo reaching max boost much quicker than before. Normally a wastegate actually starts to open 2-3psi before max boost, slowing the rate of boost rise. So if you're getting more boost earlier, you'll see a huge bump in mid-range, and you spend a lot more time here than at redline!
