Boost Junkie 12 Step

hello everyone.

i just bought a 88t2 today and i was told that i am boosting too high because my wastegate is sticking, but i havent had the chance to check it out. i love the boost, but it seems to be a major problem because i am hitting my fuel cut. my car supposedly has a jspec motor with everything else being oem. i also think that i have bad injectors. there are no horsepower modifications that i know of. i am planning on getting an upgraded turbo within the next 6 months, so i dont want to have to buy a new wastegate for this turbo. what would you do to fix this boost problem?

Do you have an aftermarket boost gauge? I would buy one just so you know the exact amount of boost youre running at.

Why do you think you have bad injectors?

because my friend saw that i have some sort oh h-pipe thing that recirculates the fuel when my injectors leak. he said that is just a temporary fix, and that i need to replace the injectors. the pipe was on the drivers side of the motor.

There should be a vaccum line running from the top of the turbo to a small actuator bolted right under the turbo. Make sure that line is there and check the operation of that actuator. Movement should be pretty stiff but you should be able to move it.

If there are any mods such as intake (k&n), exhaust, gutted cats, downpip, or any other thing then I would suspect this causing the fuel cut as well.

That "H" pipe, is a temporary fix so the fuel goes back to the tank when the car shuts off. I think its a Mazdatrix part. Without it, your car would flood when you turn it off and the car wouldnt not start. Most people install a fuel pump kill switch instead of buying that "H" pipe thing.

Gutted cats will increase your boost. Its almost like having a straight pipe.

The "H" fitting is there to allow the fuel to return into the tank since the current fuel injectors may not be able to hold fuel pressure in the off state. A better solution than new injectors is to get the existing ones cleaned and balanced. New injectors are not necessarily balanced. RC Engineering does a pretty nice job. Turn around time is relatively quick (a couple of days) and you get a graph of where your injectors were and where they are after the cleaning and balancing. I would recommend this step, since it's a lot cheaper that 4 new injectors that are not balanced.

If you are hitting fuel cut, you might have a gutted cat. An easy way to test this is to stand behind the car when it's at full operating temperature. If you pass out or the exhaust smell is noticable, you may have a gutted cat.

The 87-88 wastegates are so small it's not funny. An upgrade to the 89-91 manifold is nice since the watsgate is almost twice the size. If you are upgrading the turbo, buy an 89-91 manifold and port the wategate on these. You should be able to hold 8-10 lbs boost no problem, depending on turbo upgrade.

Congrats on your purchase and welcome to the "dark side".

You can probably clean your old ones. There isnt any regative side to having that h pipe I can think of... It will just bleed the pressure in the fuel rail back into the tank.
