Wink Intro

Hi everyone. This is my recent idea for the forum J. What I am trying to do is hold a documented thread of everything I due to this car called a blog. My goal is to share with the group my ideas; how I implemented the things I have done to the car and provide a way to allow everyone to closely follow the progress of my work without opening new threads all the time. This should serve as a great resource when searching or saying hey I know so and so did a mod I want to do how did they do it and what did people have to say about it. This will provide a great reference for all the members of the forum. As well any progress made from here on out will be documented into this threads as I have done.

The owner of this car is forum member Baby Doll. She is my girl friend and is the reason I am doing the work on it. I don’t mind I love these cars. So keep this in mined that this is a girl’s car and built to her wants and likings. I hope everyone likes it and my work. If you have questions and comments they are welcome in this thread, but please keep comments out like “It is fu**ing gay, or stupid ricer” please keep the thread professional and on topic or I will request the posts deletion from the thread. I have no issue posting that you do not like it or my work I am only requesting it be done professionally and in an adult manner. Thank you.

Previous build

Well this was the previous build completion. This of course was a 13bt swap. The motor let a coolant seal go so we swapped. I did not have a working camera during the beginning of swap so no N/A pics. I got pics after it was in and I started the FMIC and getting it running. The car never ran with a TMIC I did all this first go around. This should give you a understanding of where it was at before this last go around with it. Next go around will be on rebuild.

Engine bay cleaning

This was a big ordeal. I removed as much as I could from the engine bay. I used castrol purple power cleaner and scotch bright pads. I cleaned 4 times like this spray sit for a minute and scrub hard. Spray off with pressure washer. Repeat as needed. This thing was bad dirty it had a solid film on it that was just like someone painted gray over all the white. I scrub hard and kept at it. Everything will get one more final cleaning and polish and waxing before the upcoming car shows.

Interior cleaning

Well now his was nasty huu? Well I went through 15$ of professional carpet cleaner used the steam vac and a shop vac on this. I soaked it well covered with boiling water and scrubbed gently. I shop vac’d it out and spotted with a rag. I repeated this process till no more would come out and it started to lift the carpet color. From here I will just paint the carpet or buy new carpet.

Injector cleaning

Not to big of a deal I soaked the tips in cleaner in an attempt to minimally clean them up some. I then wire brushed the paint off of them and the rust and re-sprayed them.

Motor cleaning

This was a nightmare as well. I used steal whole, scotch bright, castrol purple cleaner, toothbrush, pressure washer. I soaked the miss out of everything and repetitively scrubbed and hosed off every part of the motor. This thing was packed with dirt grime mildew and rust. Make sure you plug all open holes before doing this! Basically I just scrubbed and repeated many times.

Gauge install

Same as the boost gauge install, I taped into the line from the head light switch for my power and ground. All connections were soldered and heat shrunk. I temp line I ran down the A frame and to the firewall I went behind the carpet and up buy the throttle pedal. I looped the wire over some metal to prevent it ever catching the pedal and causing a possible accident. I then measure the grommet and got a hole bit and drilled it through the firewall. Be very careful doing this and plane your hole well. I missed my mark by a half in. No big deal, I just installed the grommet and called it a day.

Wheel stud replacement

My studs were trashed! So I ordered new ones. Whenever I replace studs I always replace my lug nuts to. To replace these take off your tire and caliper. Look behind there u can see a little whole. Well this is where you will pull the stud out from and place it back in. I beat them out with a 3lb sledge. I use the sledge and an impact chisel to tap them in. I then took some old lug nuts and air impacted them in some. I then removed the lug nut and placed a big bolt over them. I then impacted the lug nut back on pull the stud fully into place. That’s it.

Wire harness reloom

Well this was somewhat of a pain. I did not spend too much detail b/c there will be a flying lead harness in here soon enough. This was a JDM harness that I unraveled I striped all the emissions out of the harness. I then re roughed all the connectors to where they needed to be. What needed to be lengthened I cut and soldered new wires in place. Due to my AFM relocation and how tangled the factory harness is I had to cut and lengthen two wires in here. I then taped it back up tightly and wrapped it up in blue loom.

Push button

This is the push button ignition. I did this mod the way I prefer it as I have documented here before on a how to write up, found at https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...ht=push+button. After it was all hooked up I back filled all the connections and wire connectors with hot glue. This keeps everything sealed moisture out and keeps anything from shorting on it. I then ran the button wires through a little pocket by the AC section and down to the radio section I ran them behind and into the little cubby you can see where the button is. I put the wires on the button I soldered them on with a bead of solder then filled it with hot glue to keep them from ever contacting and turning the starter wile driving.

You can see my radio surround is cracked well I purchased this one from someone and it was in pieces from shipping. I epoxy it back together. I will put this into a plaster mold soon and build one out of fiberglass and paint it.

Polishing

WOW what can I say here. I WILL NEVER DO THIS AGAIN! Ok I hand sanded all the parts that have been polished. I took pits and deep marks down with the dremal from 80 to 120 grit I hand over them with 320 680 800 1000. I cream sanded 1000 grit. The elbow I custom modified with the dremal as documented and then went on with polishing. Next time I will send this crap off. I did not take pics of the pump housing and UIM polishing.

MBC install

Well I decided to custom mount the MBC finally instead of letting it dangle in front of the turbo. I used some 1in aluminum angle iron for my bracket. I took the fitting off of the MBC a measured it up to a drill bit. I then drilled my bracket to fit. I them measures a 10mm bolt from some unknown part from the car and drilled this on the other side. I sanded the riff edges down and brought it all the way to 1000grit paper. I then polished buffed the bracket to a nice mirror finish. I mounted the bracket and then I placed the MBC over the hole and through the hole I screwed in the connector and that is how it is held in place.

Front skin replacement

This was a couple steps. First off the original bumper was cracked good as you can see. This got cracked when we first got the car I was pushing it up onto my car dolly and dint relies the car sat to low to the ground and the bumper hit the dolly and broke. So for cooling modes I cut out the grill and sanded it down. I was going to buy some ABS weld and fix the cracked piece and repaint it. The ABS weld was 160$ so I opted out of this being that I had another skin from a JDM TII in my yard. So I pulled this skin off and put it on this car. It is a way differ color but we will be repaying it anyways. I then moded the grill on the JDM skin as well.

Ducting work

I used Tyvek window striping for the ducting. My dad had rolls of it from one of the houses. It is a reflective film like tape that is quite moldable with tar on the back. I dry placed all the strips I wanted I then heated the backing "tar" with a propane torch and stuck it on where I wanted it to. It dried in seconds sticking to wherever I placed it. I burned my fingers allot :-/

I cut out some aluminum sheet metal to finish covering where I had to modify the under belly tray to fit. I used some that had a white side to blend with car while it is white. I then used some stainless metal screws and screwed it up to the bumper and from the under tray into the aluminum. I then marked took the screws out and cut them wit a cutting wheel. Reinstalled screws so they only stuck up enough to hold the items in place and keep the under tray buttoned up close and not hang down. I did not put to much effort here b/c when the body kit is put on the car and repainted and new FMIC I will build an aluminum under tray.

Painting phase 1 of 3

Ahh now here we go. If this doesn’t tell you it’s a girl’s car I dunno you got issues in the head. Basically I painted everything that is not being polished or painted during motor rebuild. This means the irons and things like master cylinders and brake boosters will be painted on rebuild along with engine bay repaint. If it is part of the car and not painted it is being polished or has been polished. I did not polish the LIM b/c I did not want to remove the turbo right now. When the GT40R goes on it will be polished and at that time I will polish LIM. The housing and front cover will be painted on rebuild. The AC compressor will be polished on rebuild and the PS pump will be painted and polished on rebuild as well.

For the paint I pulled everything I could easily pull off in a timely manner and perk the car up before some shows. I vigorously cleaned them with purple cleaner some scrubbers I then took most parts into my parts cleaner and continued. I then sanded them with 320 papers all clean. I then cleaned them with lacquer thinner. At this point the parts were painted. We used a 3-stage paint; the color chosen was pink pastel pizzazz from house of kolor with diamond white pearl. The parts were sprayed with 3 coats of primer 3 coats of paint 2 coats of pearl and 3 coats of clear. The parts have not setup long enough for me to color sand and buff then wax yet. They will be much brighter and the pearl will show much more when I do that and get the entire orange peal out of the clear.

I realise that it's for a girl, but for my tastes, a pale/baby blue or some shade of purple...even leopard spots might have worked better. To me, it just looks odd, and doesn't go well with the blue accents around the engine bay.

Again, that's MY tastes, so I realise that my opinion is quite meaningless to the owner! Really, I wish I hadn't said anything, but it was so...jarring!

It's getting a GT40R but it's not getting a standalone? The reason I ask is that I still see an AFM.
