89-91 are better daily drivers than the 86-88 because of comfort and all the extra features. I log over 35K miles a year in my 90 GXL. They are slightly more expesnive than the 86-88, but for daily driver. I think is worth it. In my case, more reliable too. As for mods, well the 86-88 are easier to made faster, dont know why, probably because of the weight. As for models, from the factory the only one that came with 2+2 is the GXL, but dealer or prev owner can installed backseats on it too. GTU have small brakes and no power options. GXL have big brakes and all power options while adding about 88lbs to the car. If you can, find a GTUs, they have big brakes, but no power options, plus a LSD and 4.3 rear end. So GTUs and GXL would be my choice.

I LOVE my 88GXL. Has all the options plus upgraded suspension, 4-pot disc brakes, LSD and it's light weight. The power options, leather interior and sunroof make this car extremely livable. The only option is does not have is the Automatic tranny, and that's one I don't want.

If I had to do it over again, I'd probably get a 89+ though. I love the front end and tail lights. I know I could put a 89 front on my car, but I don't feel like having it painted to match. I'm lazy.

Base/SE became GTU. GXL stayed the same from 86-90 until 91

Get a 91 N/A Coupe. There are only 3 versions in the US for 91. Coupe, vert and TII. The 91 is going to have the least problems in it due to the last year being sold. Anyone know if it had the LSD in it? The other option is to get a 89-90 GTUs

The differences are so slight that I don't think it matters unless you plan on racing the car. You will have a difficult enough time just finding a good 2+2. Get yourself a good car, and you can always install comfort and performance mods of your choice later on.

FYI, my friends always bitched about the back seats in my 84 Camaro, so that's why I got a car with NO back seats the next time around.
