Just get a universal K&N with the correct sized inlet.

Am I going to gain a lot of HP from a K&N cone? As compared to HKS or something along those lines?

You won't gain much with any of them. Comparing the popular ones with the K&N will be only a +/- 1 hp. Save some money and just get the K&N.

With the right exhaust/intake, I've heard you can gain up to 50 hp on a turbo car....

Should read more like:

With an intake and the right exhaust you could gain 50 hp.

It's been dyno proven by various companies and individuals. I know Racing Beat and Mazdatrix have proven it before. Upgraded the exhaust on a TII and gain up to 59 hp!!
Usually this is acheived with a SINGLE exhaust system that is really free flowing. Generally something similar to the following will allow you to get big HP gains like that:
- full 3" system (including downpipe)
- mandrel bends in piping
- 1 single large high flow cat (or NO cat at all)
- 1 single large high flow muffler
- 5" chrome exhaust tip (just kidding )

I wouldln't expect 50 hp from everyones car who puts a system like this on since it depends on the engines condition, but it has been done by many.
Expect at least a 30 hp gain though by doing that to a stock TII.

Yes Saku, a little bit of A and little bit of B! It's best to upgrade both the exhaust and the intake at the same time to get the most benefit from each. If you just do exhaust your engine can't pull in enough air - if you just do intake your engine can't push out the air enough.

As far as my reading on the forum goes, it seems that the brand isn't ALL that important when it comes to which cone filter to purchase. I have read hundreds of posts by people equally impresse with various filters such as the K&N, Apex'i, HKS, etc. The HP difference between the brand of filter wouldn't be enough to really worry about when it's on a "fairly stock" RX-7 meaning just bolt on mods.
I say just look for a good deal on any big name brand filter that fits. Make your own piping too. Intake "systems" must be the biggest rip off in aftermarket parts. $30 filter + a foot or so of plain-jane piping = $150? F*ck that!!! Just buy the filter, go to a muffler shop or hardware store and buy a length of pipe and the appropriate clamps for $10.

Saku... keep it real

It's not that simple. Pop on the Racing Beat turbo back 3" and a 3" TID and I guarantee you a 50HP gain. You will also blow your engine a few minutes later. To get the gain (safely) you need to upgrade the intake, exhaust AND fuel system.

To the original poster: there is no "best" intake. Since they all just consist of a filter, any will do as long as it is not the HKS. The HKS unit is crap, and does a very poor job of filtering. It also has a habit of falling apart and being sucked into the engine.

the best intake? well that would be anything not foam. foam is crap its made for packing **** in boxes not high performance air intake. try looking into www.mariahmotorsports.com they have a awsome into that comes with k&n filter for the intake a small k&n for the air pump hose. and a sealed box that keeps the hot air away form the intake air. you can also get a freash air head light cover that really lets the cold air rush into the intake box.

The reason Mazdatrix and Racing Beat claim 59 hp is not only because there is a 3" exhaust. They also install a fuel cut defenser and raise the boost to 10 psi or so. The free flowing exhaust just lets them get enough flow to raise the boost on the stock turbo and get a noticable gain.

Different filters aren't going to matter much, at least nothing you will feel. This is especially true as long as that damn air flow meter is still there.
