best downpipe & perf cat?? - update on 2nd FC convertible

Well the converitble is about ready for daily driving.

Can anyone recommend the best downpipe and performance cat (rated for rotary engines higher heat levels).

Also what's the cheapest one you can get and how's the quality.

Had to do a minor rebuild on the transmission & a new TPS as well.

Thanks

i was searching for downpipes yesterday :

3" HKS mild steel for $230

3" rx7fashion s.steel mandrel bends $225

3" Thunder Fabrications mandrel bends for $175 (including midpipe and shipping)

2,5" Racing Beat for $90

2,5" Mindtrain for $140

(i was thinking about getting RB one, how big difference is between 2,5" and 3" ?)

the differance between 2.5" and 3" is .5"

The 3" flows better but it dosn't mean **** unless you have 3" all the way back, if you have a 2.5" catback its pretty much useless

but hey for the price of that 175 dollar one with midpipe too I would go for that!

tmak26b,

NA - convertible

hIGGI,

Hey thanks. I'll ask mazcare on 2.5 vs 3". Typically I've heard 3" is too big and can cause problems with not enough backpressure.

NA stands for Naturally Aspirated, which is what you get if you have no turbo- or supercharger. Means you usually have less power, no turbo lag and lower repair bills.

yeah, i guess there's really no such thing as a downpipe for an n/a.....there's a race pipe...which connects from the manifold back, but in order to equal the "downpipe" translation from turbo, headers would be better

do u have emissions vauchnc?

if not i'd go with racing beat beaders to the preseilencer to the N1.
if so, i'd still go with the header, then home made cat, and N1. hehe.
you'll prob gain more from the headers than you could from the race pipe

Well what's the pipe that eliminates the pre-cat? I was planning on removing the precat and installing a "downpipe??" Then the main cat will be replaced with a perf cat.

We have yearly emission tests in Atlanta GA. Can't get you tag without passing.

the bonez racepipe (www.rx7.com) from rotary performance replaces all the cats. it connects from the manifold "box" and channels to the y-pipe.

racing beat has some other **** that might replace just the precat with a straight pipe, and then keep the main cat. not sure...

i'd still go with headers man.you'll gain more from that than anything else

Cat Replacement Pipe w/Presilencer
N/T Manual
Part Number: 16206 (vert is 16209)
Retail Price: $290.00

Cat replacement pipe for a vert is $70 sold seperately.

streetable header is $187.
PS is $198.
Totalling $385.

Is the header setup worth the extra $95 or is the Bonez racepipe($160, I think) good enough?

Found out they are called downpipes. The convertible one is slightly different as it's slightly flattened at one spot to prevent "bumping" the convertible only sway bar (convertibles have additional stiffening linkage thingamabobs).

Mazcare has a steel one in stock and is going to fabricate adapters so the high flow cat will bolt into the OEM pipes.

The replacement TPS made 1000% difference. No more backfiring, better deceleration, better idleing.

I am going to miss the EXTREEMLY WIDE powerband that the pre-cat gives you. You've got HP/torque and 500 rpms.
