Benefits from AC removal
Actually now that i think about it it will free up alot of space in the engine bay making it easier to work on the car.
I wouldnt just remove the belt though. take out the lines and ac bracket while your at it..and please vent the ac refrengerent properally.

If you remove both the power steering and the AC, it frees up the entire side of the engine bay for things (superchargers, maintenance, etc).
It also removes somewhere on the order of 50lbs of weight.
As for reducing engine drag, take the belt off the AC compressor and spin the pulley. It spins freely. The drag of one belt looping around is negligible. Now, with the AC on, you'll definitely feel it - I have to shift faster with the AC on, or the engine revs drop down too far and it's a rough shift.
If the AC light isn't coming on, there's a decent change your logicon is brain damaged. Try replacing it.
And, if your AC works, ENJOY IT. It's, eh, 91 outside. I rather like my working AC.

Yea the rest of the lights come on, but just randomly the AC light stopped. So no cold air.
I pulled mine a few weeks ago, the difference isn't really noticeable. I'm sure I'll be happy when it comes time for a spark plug change though.
If you're kinda in between, do what I did. Crack open one of the lines and see if there's still anything in there. Mine was bone dry and corroded, I didn't want to deal with fixing/replacing it, so I just pulled it out.

pro's for removal:
saves weight and reduces restriction to the raditaor and frees up engine space.
con's of removal:
loss of air conditioning
freeing up horsepower from removing the belt is a myth, you may notice a .5HP increase with it removed. keep in mind this is with the A/C off, with it on it generally pulls about 10% of the engines horsepower but it really is nice having A/C on a roasting day out...
so weigh the pros and cons of having it and decide then if it is worth keeping.

I just removed the AC in my 88 SE, and i didnt notice any improvement in performance. It just clears up the engine bay a little, and possibly gets better flow to the radiator
Removing A/C prolly is only worth a hp but 50 pounds weight savings is a good start when removing weight from a car. Having no A/C condensor should allow a massive improvement in air flow thru the radiator. With no condensor you could also go with a larger front mount.
If you're strictly trying to shave punds off of the car, do it. If this is your daily driver don't. When your moving 80 mph, and it's a hot and muggy day, the humidity will still get to you. My system needs a recharge, and dammit, that's what I'm going to do, I'm even getting it converted for R134a. Screw weight and horsepower, I want to be comfortable.
it will move the weight distrobution rearward. this can be a benefit since most of the stuff people do for weight reduction (spare, jack, rubber mat under the hatch, 1/2 tank or less of gas) is in the rear and can leave the car nose heavy and with a tendency to understeer. the a/c is the biggest shunk of weight (besides the battery) that can come out of the front, and can help balance the car out if this is an issue for you.
so how exactly do you remove it? I just got a 84 gsl-se and the front end was damaged so I can't even fit a batter in there right now without it rubbing against the A/C pully. I might put it back in later I just want it out so I can fiddle with the engine for now

Never mind.

BUT, in other questioning..... what can come out from under the dash when ac is pulled, that is without affecting the heater? I know near seattle, ill never use my ac (havent in 2 years) but i damn sure need my heater.... when looking under the P side dash, it appears that the AC pump stuff is connected to the heater and central blowers.... will his kill my heater too? and also, how can i make my heater HOTTER?
Recycle your R12 if you do it. You have something like $70 worth of R12 in there, no joke. It's illegal to produce R12 now, but it is legal to buy and sell it. Its price has skyrocketed as a result.
