Battery tray and tie-downs

My battery isn't secured at all. Found that out when I went to AutoX last weekend.

So I went and bought the brace and the two hold-down bolts.

Now I can't find anywhere to bolt those things into. Do they bolt into the lower tray? I'm kinda thinking my tray may be busted.

Thanks for any help.

Option 1 - Check area salvage yards for a useable battery bin.

Option 2 - Rig up a marine battery box to do the job.

There are two protrusions in the bottom of the lower tray. The elbow of the tie downs hook there.

I also found my battery just sitting in the battery tray with nothing securing it to the tray.

I agree with Jodoolin, just get a set of hold-down brackets for the battery tray and they will hook into the sides of the battery tray and hold your battery in place.

Any parts house should have a selection of tie downs. Salvage yard or dealer for the tray.

They are called "j-hooks", and the hook onto a protrusion on the bottom of the battery tray.

You can buy generic ones from almost any auto parts store...

No, you don't need the battery cover to secure the battery.
You *do* need the cross bar that goes over the top of the battery.

Those universal battery tie-down kits include two long j-hooks, nuts / wingnuts, and the cross bar piece to secure your battery.

The pic is from the Autozone online catalog...

easy enough, thanks. one more dumb question. will this ^ work WITH the battery cover. i assume this would be ABOVE the cover to keep it secure also? or would it be below? sorry but my car never came with nothing but the tray so im in the dark with this and id like to get the caover also so it will look decent.

If you can believe it, it all fits under the stock cover.

The battery "box" fits around all of that, and the cover fits on top of everything.

There is nothing holding the cover down, but there are "tabs" on the sides that keep the battery cover in place.
I don't think the cover can fly off, as the hood (when closed) does not allow the cover to come off!

Good luck!

And then when you hit a big bump, the battery jumps up and shorts against the inside of the hood...Or falls over, or tears the cables off...

Depends on the person tieing the bugie cord. Mine did fine for 3 months.

yeah, or you could just weld one up out of aluminum like i did and drill holes into the car right under the battery to secure it. it works very well and is very light(aluminum). but many people don't know how to weld aluminum, so i guess rigging up a cheap plastic one would work. lol.

Why aluminium?

My steel box weighs under 3 LBs and is much stronger and easier to fabricate:

The battery cover is cosmetic as long as you cover the terminals with plastic covers, I made my own hooks and brackets. I think you need the battery box to keep the cover on. Check the FSM.
