Bad LSD?

Ok, so I have a S4 with a LSD friction plate differential and as I have the rear wheels up in the air I noticed a slight irregularity. With the trans in neutral as I manually rotate one tire slowly the other tire rotates with it. Now as I apply a sudden burst of wheel spin the other tire doesn't spin at the same rate and it wont turn, which leads me to say that when I try holding one tire and spin the other It allows me to do so. With the trans in gear as I spin the wheel one way the other wheel spins in the reverse direction.
Is it a bad LSD or a case of no LSD whatsoever. Or does it need rebuilding (pretty sure of it)?

Any thoughts?

Ok, so i did some reading on LSD and VLSD. I also did the brake apart test on my clutch type LSD which turned out to be around 10lb/ft (horribly low). I did tare apart the diff and removed the LSD for repair. I picked up a VLSD from a junkyard a while back which had low miles for the year.

I would like if someone could chime in with their experience of running a VLSD on a NA setup.

my lsd does that too rotates slow but when u speed it up it doesnt go, and in gear its reverse.
i think thats for when there excessive wheel spin that the other slows down to try and counter balance it.

Rebuild using the clutch style lsd. The vlsd doesn't have as strong of a lock as the clutch type

I took the LSD apart, and hopefully the plate thicknesses will be within spec. So far the thrust washers measured 1.53 and 1.47.
I know people shim these up using aluminum coke cans, I might give that a try.

All the fuss about the VLSD, why did they make them for the 89-92?
