I believe its function is to allow more air into the manifold when the a/c is on, thus raising the idle to kep the car from stalling under the load. If you have no a/c, you don't technically need it. some who have removed the A/C system and BAC use a plate to block the hole. If you plan on fixing the A/C, I would leave it on.

MY BAC puked several months ago. While I searched for a new one, I unplugged it. My idle dropped to about 400 rpms. I turned up the idle a bit and the car ran fine. It still idled low with the A/C on, just didn't stall.

Hope this helps!
Michael

If you plan on using your A/C again, leave it alone. If not, then you can block it off and it won't hurt anything else. You will have to raise your idle a bit like Michael said. It doesen't affect HP or anything like that.

well the AC prolly wont be put back on for another year
bottom of the list right now
speed or cold air ?
but I have been having wierd idle problems
it likes to bounce around
sometimes it will stay steady at 750 other times maybe at 1100
then the rest it just bounces
TPs is adjusted. I am replacing the vac lines right now
just heard that the BAC can cause a unsteady idle at times.

If you still have your power steering you'll want to keep the BAC. If you remove the power steering and your A/C then you don't really need it.

The BAC has nothing to do with the power steering. It is the Air Bypass Solenoid Valve that does the job for it.

Really? hmm

I thought the BAC supplied extra air whenever any of the accessories were used? Guess I learn something new every day.

damn chevy fuel pump block off plates
they seem to be a catch all block off
have a few of them on my toyota celcia A.K.A 78 POS.
but hey can't complain the most reliable motor I have ever seen.
240k miles never rebuilt. ran for 2 weeks without any coolant in the motor. never gets an oil change runs only on 2-3 quarts of oil at most. and still get 20-25 miles to the gallon out of it

do you guys have any other ideas though to my idle issue
I mean I used to get this to idle at a steady 450-500 rpms about 1000 miles about with a total of 162k on car.

it seems to want to choose it's own idle and no matter what I do it does something different

I have a problem with my AC on as well. It stalls the car, but only on a very hot day. The blower speed switch for the fan also has an effect on idle. I've taken off my BAC and tested it and it's OK. I've read other posts that it could be the signal from the ECU to the BAC....a transistor or something.

Since I live in FL and the AC is usually on full blast I was thinking about gutting the BAC so air flows all the time. Comments? I'd do this ONLY after I was sure the BAC itself was the cause.

I just wanted to correct myself, it is not the Air Bypass Solenoid Valve but the Air Supply Valve which is only found in turbo models. The Air Bypass Solenoid Valve supplies additional air to create high idle on cold start.

So I think for an NA, you would need the BAC to supply additional air when the A/C, P/S, Neutral, Clutch, etc. is used.
