Automatic GXL Good for T2 5speed conversion.
Automatic GXL Good for T2 5speed conversion.
Just wondering how much of a bolt in this is. The car is a red 87 gxl s5 and its n/a auto. Verynice car tho but I just want to know how much of a pain it would be. Any kind of custom brackets needed or is it just a bolt on deal.
the only thing that will be a pain is the crossmember for the transmission.... they are bolted differently to the chassis in differnet places....that is (i think) the only fabbing your gonna have to do!!!
That's gonna be kind of a bitch. First, the process of going from N/A auto to N/A 5speed is annoying enough (look for a writeup). Then, you also have to do everything necessary to switch over to T2 (rear end, clutch... etc).
Dude, seriously, you've had how many posts and still haven't learned how to search or look at the Faq? this topic is covered at least once a week.

You are so lucky i'm a nice guy.
and yes i did the conversion about 3 weeks ago, if you even slightly mechanically inclined it's a peice of cake. just takes a little time and paitence.

Quick edit to my post, then all you'd need is the n/a clutch stuff switched to the T2 drivetrain stuff like derranged hermit sez.

.
well from what i understand the gxl has a lsd rear end so i wouldnt have to swap that. and ive learned that i can buy the t2 motor and tranny and put it in as a whole. then i need a drive shaft and a custom crossmember(any shop make these or am i on my own) plus computer and wiring harness.
would i be better off just using the t2 shell I have? I just really like how clean the gxl i looked at is. it has the electronic suspension and is very clean.
sorry i have been searching but i keep seeing people go from n/a auto to manual. and i kno that the t2 tranny is different so i was just wondering if it would fit different than the manual one.

just crossmember fitment issues......everything else will fit....... you'd be better off putting a t2 lsd rear end in......yes, the gxl has a lsd, but..... the halfshafts are larger on the t2...... that would save you the trouble of having a custom driveshaft made!! because the turbo d-shaft does NOT bolt up to the na rear end!! so, good luck

lol stick with the auto rear end LSD.. unless you plan on putting over 250 to the ground you should be fine with and N/A tranny
plus the auto LSD's also have a 3.9 rear end
more power meaning more time spent in your power band meaning more time spend accelerating instead of changing gears

Also kevin updated his tech section at rotaryresurrection to include pictures of the crossmember adaptor. Those pictures are a HUGE help to understanding what needs to be done.
Is it a "boltin" by rx-7 standards: yeah.
By honda standards: no
It aint like putting a new bolt-on airfilter. Give yourself a weekend, if you're in a northern climate, give yourself a week. Northerns have rust.
