Auto Transmission Problem

Hey guys i have a problem with my transmission in my 87 SE, when I put it in reverse it will hesitate for a second then it stalls, i can get it to work sometimes but most of the time it does not work right. Has anyone experienced this same problem? Please help.

Thanks
Dan

My automatic was always driving me crazy. Is it doing that coming down from Park or up from Neutral? I used to hear a clunk in the transmission shifting to reverse. After 2 rebuilds, I opted for a 5 speed. No problems with that since and it's not that hard.

its doing it both ways from park and form neutral, i was thinking about doing the transmission conversion, did u do that yourself or did u have it done by a mechanic how much did the whole thing cost you .

I did it myself. If you've ever changed your clutch, you could probably do it. I would guess the hardest part would be tightening the flywheel on to the correct torque. I bought the transmission, pedals and slave cylinder from a local rx7-yard for $200. I bought a new master cylinder ($80), throw-out bearing ($12.25), stock clutch ($54), stock pressure plate ($85), and aluminum flywheel ($359) from Mazda Motorsports. You could go with a 14lb. lightened steel flywheel for $270. I put it in a '91 RX7 convertible. The 5-speed shifter mounted about 1/2" towards the engine, so I had to modify the opening a little (it's hardly noticable). One concern I had was the transmission mounts are different for the automatic and manual. To get an manual trans mount to work I would have had to do some custom sheet metal work. A few people that had done it said they left the trans mount out of the equation. I did the same and after 80k miles it's never had any problems. If I were in your position, I would get a few more opinions for assurance (I got mine from this guy named Brian at MazdaUSA), then go for it. It definately beats dropping 2 grand for an automatic rebuild (been there/done that).

One thing I forgot. You have to get a shorter drive shaft. I bought a used one and had them put on 2 new U-joints. After doing that, I found out that they could have just shortened the drive shaft I had...doh!!!!!!!

the 5-speed swap is a breeze, it costed me somewhere around $500 with a rebuilt tranny. if u can remove and install a tranny u can do this, the most time comsuming part for me were the pedals. everything bolts up where it needs to be minus the tranny mount, i made one myself following hyptno7's (sp?) advise. do a search on it, several people have done it. i myself have put close to 20k on my car since the swap with no problems yet.

I hear ya skydivr, that didn't dawn on me when I wrote it. I've had 3 RX7s, only 1 came as an AT, guess I'm just getting old. I'm on my 5th car right now...unfortunately it isn't an RX7

Change/flush the ATF

Check transmission vacuum modulator if so equipped and replace

Up the idle and give the engine a tuneup

IF it dies, just push the gas a little bit up to 1k and put it in gear. It should go smoothly in and not stall.

I got mad at my auto 87 beater a few days ago, It was stalling into drive. Started back up, reved it to 3k and dropped it into drive. Got a squeal and i was on my way.

the motor and tranny will be coming out shortly for a v8 swap.
