Auto Box Issues

Hiya

Well its been a while since i have posted on here .. but i thought i would give you guys a chance to work out whats wrong with my FC before i put it in the crusher

Its a S5 JDM Turbo II Cab with an auto box

At this moment intime its sat on the drive as its lost reverse gear ( and 3rd and OD )

I have removed the transmission sump , cleaned up the magnets , refitted and re-filled with fresh oil and it still wont engage reverse

It grabs D/1/2 no probs - just everything else no worky

I even get the reverse lights on when i select R , but i just get a lot of whinning from the box ( sounds like the front of it - but could be anywhere to be honest )

I to just to assume that the box is dead ???

When i drained the fluid - it was black and looked really nasty .. nothing like the new red stuff i put in

Thanks

Stu / Grinder

How did the fluid smell? Burnt?

In my experience, changing auto trans fluid usually does more harm than good, unless it's burnt. And then you usually have other problems.

Any reason not to convert it to 5spd?

Not sure if you were being sarcastic, but if you decide to scrap the car shoot me a PM, maybe we can work something out. I hate to see FCs go to waste

i think it was burnt to be honest - really didnt look healthy ! LOL

and the conversion to 5 speed .. ohhhh its a big job .. been doing some reading

and its a fair list

1 - gearbox
2 - flywheel
3 - starter
4 - clutch pedal
5 - clutch
6 - master cylinder ( and slave )
7 - prop

the list goes on and on

its now been sat on the drive for the last 3 months , and its looking very sorry for itself

i dont want to break it - but it might head that way ( or sell it as a project )

thing is - i have NO idea what its worth

Its a rust free chassis , with about 7K on a full rebuild , got little bits of aftermarket stuff ( cone filter , fcd , fully decatted , drilled and slotted discs , full tan leather interior etc.. )

like i said - for a value , no one will tell me

If it were me, I'd convert it...all that stuff really isn't too hard to install. You may want to shoot a PM to Higgi on here. He's in the Czech republic and probably has or can get all those parts for a decent price and would probably be willing to help you out. His english is really good and he's possibly one of the coolest guys out there. He would probably have some pretty good tips on completing the conversion with little trouble, too.

With it not being able to get past 2nd gear the value is greatly diminished, regardless of what mods it has. I don't know what the UK market is like, but down here in Germany you could probably get 2-3k USD for it...maybe less.

Manual conversion is much easier than you think

People kept telling me not to bother because it was "too hard" but when I finally got into it, it was really easy. ^_^

S5 transmission, two pieces of angle iron, use the auto crossmember [unless you have both manual and auto mounts.. a few cars shipped with both], swap the brake/clutch pedals by swapping the shaft [instead of the whole pedal assembly], do a tiny bit of wiring [4 wires is all I had to install I believe..]

And you'll have a vastly faster car!

it wouldnt be too bad if i had a manual scrap car aswell - then you can just swap all the stuff as you go along

Derekcat - was my list right ?? - or i have missed stuff ?

blk87 - i wouldnt even want that much for it to be honest - i was working on £1K ( UK ) so about 1600 USD ?

Hummm still not sure .. but your input is appreciated

Well if you decide selling is the route you want to go, let me know, we'll work something out.

I've spent a lot of time and and aspirin for headaches from an automatic transmission. I have an 87 auto gxl and rebuilt it after second gear band let loose. I've had it apart another time to change a few things after horrible 1-2 slip. It's a year and a half later and I've still not got it back to satisfactory condition.

In your case, you should have the electronic shift control. Are you sure that all of the shift solenoids are working correctly? Check wiring and connections. In the n4ael and l4n71b transmissions, usually 2nd and 4th go out first. When I cracked mine open there was no material left on the brake band and 4th gear clutches were completely worn. Since the e4n71b is the heavy duty version of the l4n71b, I swapped parts to replace with stronger. One more brake band adjustment should get it all wrapped up for me.

Point being that I really enjoy driving my auto gxl. Especially on trips. If I was to do it all over again because of a bad auto box, I'd haul the auto to the scrap yard and install a 5 speed.

You only missed a few things: the pedal bar, manual brake pedal, and adapters for the manual.

If you do not have manual mounts [most likely] you have to buy an S5 manual transmission - they have a Y-bracket that bolts on diagonally like the auto - and then install the Automatic crossmember onto the manual transmission using two pieces of angle iron with two holes drilled into them. See attachment.
