I just have one 12 Type E. Not EXTREMELY heavy, and was pretty cheap at the time. The box fits prefectly between the strut towers (which I never got around to bolting) and leaves me with lots of room to store all my books and gear in the very back and I still have access to my storage bins. The amp I just have behind the passenger seat. With the seat tilted back no one is the wiser to know an amp is there.

If you want a system that sounds good but won't slow you down, Ive got two of them.
In my 86 I have a Sony CD player with the built in crossover, this is important. I have a set of Qart 4"separates, with external two way crossover. The mids in the stock location and the tweeters are on the windshield pillars pointed more towards the windshield than the opposite side of the car. this helped with staging. I worked on aiming these things for hours and finally desided that just using the double sided adhesive foam tape thing put them in just the right spot. right where the pillar meats the dash. The mids would sound better in the doors or kick panels, but I didn't want to cut.
These and the rear Quart 6.5" mids (no tweaters) are powered from the head unit. The head filters the lows from the built in amp. Sony is the only manufacturer that does this, to the best of my knowledge.
Then I have a 100x2 Audiocontrol amp, you can use whatever you want as long as the power is at least that. It is running stereo to two Bazooka DVC 6.5" subs, mounted in the spare tire well, pushed to the right side so you have about 10" of space from the left wall. With the speakers are facing the right wall, I did that to protect the speakers. Since they are DVC I have each cabinet wired paralell for a 2 Ohm load.

I hit 150 Dbs with out distortion. It is more than loud enought to cover my exhaust pipe noise at WOT.
Total weight for this system is under 25Lbs including every wire and skrew. I forgot to weight the stock system, so I don't know the actual pounds gained over stock. but the spare wieght more than 25 pounds, so you win.

And this is onyl if you cant live without music. Personally i feel that FC's are not meant for big sound systems. The weight of the car is extremly important.

Focus on driving more
This is what I was thinking of. I don't like big systems, unless it's in a custom truck or pure show car, but I am definetely tired of my less than ideal crap speakers. I had originally thought of the subs in the bins thing (yes I do have bins), and after seeing some of the pics posted, I think I'll go that way. I think I'll do the same thing that 86gxl did, but I think I'll put a plexiglass cover over the sub (a 10', 12' at most) and leave the other bin normal for the amp.

If I get new speakers only, I'll just get a small 200w amp and put it on the wall slope behing the armrest, so I can adjust it easily.

Thanks for the opinions guys!

Very nice. That's the kind of subtlety I had in mind.

Mine is the idea of extravagance.

Not very hidden.
twin 12" Hollywood Excursion 1240Ds
in a big black Fusion dual-chamber box.
powered by a 800w RMS SPL-III amp (that thing alone weighs a ton)
some cheap Pioneer head unit
Infinity Reference up front
Aria somethings in the back.

Makes enough bass to rattle things you didn't know weren't tightly secured
if I pop the latch on the hatch and roll the windows down, the subs can open the hatch for me

NO it isn't, when I find my sheet, I'll scan it. It just needs the power. It's the Bazookas, which sound great, then add in cabin gain, and a very small interior. I'm in
Atlanta now. When I get back I'll post pics and see if I can find my SPL sheet again. I'll go ahead and tell you now though, this sheet isn't sanctioned. it is just with my test equipment I have left from when I rean my stereo shop.

use subs appropriate for the power range of your amplifier.
go to a local audio/video installer and talk to them.. don't go to best buy or circuit city.

what we have is called Audiocrafters A/V. they are the local experts.

As far as slowing down, my car felt like rocket after removing all the extra weight that stereo provided. And, no, subs dont make all music sound better. Run a set of nice componant speakers and you'll get all the bass youll ever need and it'll sound real good, and not just like an obnoxious boom that drowns everything. Right now im running two pairs of 6 1/2 infinity kappa components off a 50 x 4 high end amp, and it sounds better than my subs ever did. So my opinion, nice sounding stereo= good. subs(system) = obnoxious and pointless
I run a pair of kappa perfects off a pretty good amp, there's no bass in there, only midbass. For true full range sound u need subs in there. But that's not to say that everyone needs a sub, but to play music at all frequencies a sub is needed. Did u have your speakers in before when u had the sub in? Cause having a sub is pointless without good speakers cause the sub will drown them out too....here's my setup:

There you go....

It is imposibble, I can't hit 150DB on my FC with two SAS 10 inch (on Kicker free air) run by a Rodek 2300!

Two 6.5 is not going to cut it on a IASCA sanction event

Get a GOOD 4 channel amp (PPI\Xtant\DEI\etc), get a GOOD combo speakers for the front. Run two channels for the front speakers, and bridge the other two into a 8 INCH sas BAZOOKA!

Small, relatively inexpensive, and will sound good IF you choose good components\system!

Don't forget a EQ at the very least (X over MIGHT not be needed)!

Hmmmm, I think some people should rethink what there saying.

In my 90 GXL I had a single 15 inch sub in my car. THing hit hard, I dont realy listen to rap but I did listen to some just to get the feel for the sub.

Now I have 88 Vert, I have 2 12's in the trunk, you pretty much can not hear them outside the car but inside you can.

Component speakers are great, but if you dont know how to set them up right witht he positioning, your highs will scream and you wont hear the bass. My recomendation is to just geta little 8 insh bazooka bass tube. Or the inifitiny Basslink.

Bass is everything in a car. If you have to much youll drown out the words, if you have to little your speakers sound cheap.

Buy a little sub woofer then wount it somewhere nice. thats all you need

thanks

when you live in one of the highest murder per capta cities, other crimes are fairly commonplace. I mean its best to keep things subtle. Hell when I get about 5 or 6 blocks from where I'm about to park, I turn the system off so no one even knows I have one. I'm trying to rebuild part of the stock face plate to adapt onto the frame of the stereo surround so that way they think i still have to stock stereo.

I'm big into hiding things, its a lot of fun.

Build the right kind of box, and a 10" sub is ALL you need.

I have a nice little system in my 89 vert. It consists of an Alpine head unit and all infinity kappa speakers in the stock possitions. You cant real see my system but it is good. I left the headrest speakers stock because i dont wanna touch those right now. It wasnt a cheap system but it is not like my others. I had 3 12 inch subs in the back of my old 88 SE back in the day.

IF you want to hit 150db with bazookas (I have no idea why you would want to do it with bazookas) you would need to have at least this set -up

That's a total of 570 Watts and an array of 8 6" bazookas.

100x2 and 2 6" bazookas
