Apex i Intake

I was wondering if it is worth putting a apex i intake without a heat shield around . If so why?

Thanks in advance

Buy some piping or goto http://www.mariahmotorsports.com. Otherwise you'll just suck in hot air from the engine bay negating any performance gains. It has cost me #20 bucks for piping to make a true CAI. Use 92-96 Prelude eBay piping. Just a little trimming and its good to go.

Or use the http://www.1300cc.com guide for a cold air box.

if you're not sucking in cold air, then you are losing something over the stock configuration, so do it right or don't do it at all.

It dosnt take much of a heat shield to keep the heat out when at speed but yes doing nothing will make it kind of a useless mod. The nice thing about the apex is it filters better than any other cone filter or oiled filter out there and is mantinence free.

Is it because of that shady internet test?

For the record I do not dislike Apex, but I must say that their intakes are one of poorer design. I would buy an HKS intake and install a fresh air headlight duct.

headlight ducts look like they do almost nothing. build a cold air box if anything, and duct it somewhere.

that's a bunch of BS. i had driven my car w a K&N replacement filter for a few thousand mi. then i put on my apex i. i could feel a difference even with no heat shield, airbox ect. just install it for yourself + see.

Did you feel a difference? Or just hear one? And even if there was a difference, do you think you can feel a 3 or so hp difference with just your but?

I'm just skeptical, I don't want to come off as a jackass. And aslong as you like it, that is all that counts. Just don't want people to be misled.

yeah. i actually felt a difference. maybe i'm just extra sensitive to that kind of stuff, or i had something seriously wrong w my stock airbox, but i felt a difference. it was small, but i still felt it.

i guess it's up to each person + their individual car. just try it + if you don't like it then switch back.

I wouldn't recommend just a filter. A true CAI or airbox is the only way to go since you would be otherwise sucking in HOT air, which is bad. Plus by using a cold air box or CAI you will improve the intake much more, creating more gains. That and when I modified my airbox I thought I felt a difference. In reality my track times changed 0.3 of a second, and I bet thats because I learned to launch better .

On a turbocharged car it doesnt matter much. The turbo is going to compress the air to a very high temp. anyway. This is what FMIC's are for.

Don't mean to sound rude, but that is flat out wrong. The amount of heat exiting the turbo is a function of efficiency, pressure, and the temperature of the air entering the turbo. Unless your intercooler is 100% efficient, you are shooting yourself in the foot sucking in hot air. If anything, it matters even more on a turbocharged car.

Pure BS. If it's colder when it enters the intake, it'll be colder when it reaches the engine. Simple physics.

Care you put your butt dyno to the test and have a real dyno confirm it?

Why are they of poorer design? Looks like a small velocity stack to me, thats why I picked one up for myself.

What a lie, the air temperature will usually increase in a fiex amount throught the turbo. Like sucking in 100 degree air and shooting out 200 degree air. If it was 60 degree air, it could come out 160 degrees. Which would be a variable drop in intake temps.

And we all now how bad heatsoak is for an intercooler and an engine. So having hotter air passing threw it is bad. Cold air is always important no matter what the car is. A turbocharged car needs it more then anything !

I'd like you hear your reasons for thinking that.

yeah i'd actually like to see it (not trying to be an *** here, but i'm curious as to all of this. put the whole thing to rest once + for all) but i seriously did feel a bit of a gain from it. especially when it's cold. if i had the time + money, i'd make 4 dyno runs (or sets of 4) 2 'cold' + 2 warm. each with the stock airbox + then w the apexi. then you could see the difference in them depending on engine bay temps etc.

The point is, part of the gain from reducing intake restriction is lost because of the increase in intake temps. You might have felt a small gain, but it's not as much as it would be if intake temps had remained as they were with the stock airbox.
