Anyone tried rebuilding stock radio/cd players?

I searched through the archives and did a quick google search through the site... couldn't find any how-to's or write-ups.
I have an 88 vert that came with the CD player and AE system. I swapped out the stock unit a while ago and have the old deck sitting on my desk as an art piece right now - thought it might be cool to try and get it working again and sell it or something. The radio worked fine but the tape player has a tape stuck in it that won't eject and the cd player wasn't working when I got the car.

HAHA you some BK for car parts that's awesome.. I'm not looking to put one back in my car though, just looking for something to do with it since it's a paper-weight at the moment! I also like learning about things and I haven't done any circuit-board work since highschool You should come out to the Swap Meet thing on May 14th in Hagersville though Styx.

I found a stock s5 radio at pick a part.
And I wanted to make the interior all stock looking.
So i went to a audio store and they said they can rebuild it for like $100
But I decided to just toss it in, and end up only the radio working.

If you have a true desire to tinker and to try to get the thing working, I suggest pulling it apart, cleaning it up, and see what may be obviously wrong with it and correcting it. Gotta start somewhere.......
I don't know much about electrical other than what I learn from others, so I can't help you there - but my guess would be that something mechanical has seized and just needs to be freed-up.

Only someone who knows the mechanism will spot "obviously wrong" issues.
In my (limited) experience, the solid state components usually last longer than the mechanical/transport assembly.

One thing to think about is that old CD players do not play burned CDs. IIRC the RX7 ones do not. So it's a case of whether it's worth the effort and money. I try to carry nothing but burned CDs in the car.

No they do play burned CDs, but they don't play burned CDs if they are burned too fast, 48x doesn't work well but if you tone the speed down to 24x they play fine~

Is there anyway of adding an AUX input? Or would you just have to use one of those cassette tape things.

Yeah give it a try and see! If it still doesn't play then your cd player may be actually dead~

You'd have to use a cassette adapter for the easiest, running an AUX might be possible with the stock Amp but I'm not too sure on the wiring~

That's some very interesting information, thanks for the heads-up. I still stand by the work not being worth the effort for most owners. I personally would rather own a newer aftermarket piece than make keep 20 yr old electronics working.

As a sidenote. Many years ago I replaced an aftermarket Denon headunit because it didn't play burned discs and didn't list CD-R or RW on it's compatibility list.

lol seems this has gone a bit off-topic. I was just wondering initially if anyone had seen some sort of write-up like there is for the flickering clock display or something along those lines.
