Got around to tearing down my transmission after a whining noise came up shortly after I rebuilt it. Found that one of the 5th gear sleeve keys came loose due to a broken snap ring and was grinding against the countershaft gear.
I can't FOR THE LIFE OF ME find a replacement. Mazda no longer makes them, atkins rotary doesnt sell any, Rock Auto is a bust too and I cant find any used s4/s5 Turbo Tranny's either (not that I want a whole new trans). Does anyone know where I can get a replacement S4 5th gear within the state of Florida? Man's getting desperate...
Edit: I can do out of state so long as it can get shipped.
Mazda calls the T2 trans an R type. they used the same design in the FC, FD, B2600, MPV, 86-1992 Ford Ranger and Aerostar, Rx8, 929, and probably some other things

Will I need to replace the whole 5th/reverse assembly though? I thought the S4 tranny's had lower 5th gear. or should I look for an equivalent year? Also will they look any different? I just did a quick search and couldn't find anything that looks even remotely similar to what I have.
Also I thought the other vehicles you mentioned used the NA version. they made them using the t2 style tranny's?
S5 T2 JDM has shortest 5th ratio
S5 T2 USDM has tallest 5th ratio
S4 T2 USDM 5th Mid of the two and cannot be swap without swapping whole reverse and 5th assembly
When i grenaded my 5th, i gave up looking for s4 gears, picked up s5 trans didnt realise its jdm short 5th, luckily was able to find new usdm 5th counter and main gears. Also s5 trans has synchro reverse.

good luck with which ever option you go with
I've got a few friends at a transmission shop I work at giving me a hand now. hopefully they can pull a few strings.
Also found this on ebay that looks to be really similar, I messaged the seller to see what the teeth/spline count was so if I get confirmation its the same it should work. Only downside is it costs an arm and a leg even before you take into account its coming from the land down under.
