Anybody tried mounting a fan directly to the shaft instead of a clutch and fan?
I have a bad radiator fan clutch. Don't want to spend the $$ for a new one, nor do I really want to use an electric fan. I see that Summit racing sells many fans that bolt directly to the Shaft that drives the fan. This would eliminate the clutch. So the fan would turn faster as the engine turns faster. There would probably be a need for a spacer to clear the belts. What are the drawbacks of this? Will it be really loud with a fan spinning like mad all the time?

I do not know about that. I know that the fan clutch come in and will not let the fan spin above 3500 rpm. I you do not have a clutch then the fan could spin to 7 or 8 thousand depending on your redline. I wouldn't want my fan to spin that fast, it may fly apart and that out not be good. I really do not know, there is probable fans out there that will spin that fast. If I was you I would put in a electric one. I think that you can get a 16" fan from Autozone for 65 dollars or so. It is up to you?

Former Moderator. RIP Icemark.
I have seen fan blades fly off because a fan clutch failed... they poke right through the hood.
Funny I have only seen that on a chevy though...
