Any tricks in getting fan off of pulley?

Im trying to take apart my waterpump and housing and i cannot get the fan off the pulley for the life of me. What are some ticks in getting the damn thing off. How long should i let the PB blaster soak?

It seems as if someone might have taken the liberty of almost rounding off a nut for me on one of them already....

what can i do?

"unbolt engine fan (use a box end 10mm wrench and a long flat screwdriver to keep it from spinning),"

http://www.rotaryresurrection.com/2n...e_removal.html

He has pretty good tech advice, you should check out his other articles. If the bolts are stripped already you might have to get a dremel, or a hand saw and cut the bolts in half. I had to cut one bolt with a hand saw and it took forever.

I took a flathead screwdriver and turned it sideways inbetween the pulley and front cover, to, more or less, lock it in place, then used a 10mm box end wrench and got the nuts loose.

yuppers. Use a screw driver to keep the fan from spinning (jam it in such a manner that you can use one arm with the screwdriver to hold the fan and the other hand to get the bolts off) and eventually get it off.

yeah, i got all but 1 loose and the one that i cant get is completely stripped...so i guess I have to cut it. does that mean i will have to purchase a whole new fan pulley or how would I replace that?

Those four nuts thread onto studs which screw into the waterpump snout.
If you must cut the last one off all you'll have to replace is that one stud-no big deal.

try to just cut the nut in half, not the stud. Then you will only have to find a new nut. It is the same size as the tail light nuts.

I can't picture how you could do that, the nut is backed up the fan's flange and there's like 1" of clearance in front of it...how do you propose to cut it in half (especially without damaging the stud).

The stud (and nut) are standard 6mm parts and can be obtained at any NAPA or even Ace Hardware.

I ended up finally getting it off w/ a bunch of PB plaster and a vise grip...that thing was torn up! lol

I have another ?. In the FSM it says to line up the E-pulley mark w/ the pin on the block...i didnt do that, will that cause a problem if I only have 1 belt for my engine?

Is there ANYTHING i shouldnt do to the pulley while the belt is off, or anything period?

The belt could care less- you were supposed to align the pulley first to keep your timing marks correct.

You didn't change the timing at all...assuming the CAS was untouched, of course.
The timing marks on the pulley might be off though.

no, i havent touched the CAS, just removed the alt and the waterpump housing. So i shouldnt have to worry about that then. Thanks for the help

Im guessing w/ the belt off there'd be no point in lining the marks up would there? lol

Wait a minute...have you removed the eshaft pulley or just the belt?
If only the belt, you're golden...nothing has changed.
If you removed the pulley it's still no big deal cause I think it only goes back on one way, the bolt holes are not symmetrical.
I could be wrong about that though.

Anyway, if the pulley has been removed, now would be a good time to clean it and refresh the paint on the timing marks.

I've only removed the belt, not the pulley, but the pulley has been moved forward and reverse while i was treying to get the waterpump pulley off and again since i've taken the belt off. So since i havent taken the pulley off im good then? thats sweet. Cuz i was trying to figure out in my mind how anything could be off lol

thanks again for the help. Tom Servo FTW!
