alternator upgrade?

well a simple one is use the s5 alternator instead of the s4 alternator. needs some things swapped over but its better than the original one i had.

other people have made write ups using alternators from other vehicles or having their alternator rebuilt to handle more amps.

FD alt swap is pretty damn easy and a very good upgrade over the s4.

You need... the alt, a new pulley (japan2la has a great one) and some very basic rewiring skills.
There's a pic in the FAQs I think of how to rewire it, but I'm too lazy right now to find it.

^^^ x2 this was pretty much the first thing i did to my 7 (except the tune-up) it's hella easy, you can find cheap FD alts if you search around. then the only question is two belts or yoohoo?

What about S5 ? Is it easy to swap over to FD alternators?

I did some research before, 80amp is barely enough juice for even stock system + I dont even know how old is the Alternator in my car + Im planning to install a NAV to the 7 so ... I need at least 100 amp.

I had my alternator upgraded by IRP, its now 140 amps. They specialize in rebuilding FD ones, but can do FC ones too. Great business to deal with. http://irperformance.com/

Did you have the FD alternator upgraded, and what was the cost to do so?

had a local shop rebuild my s4 alternator to 120 amps I believe. saves the hassle of cutting, rewiring, and chasing down parts.

I bought a new FD alternator, it came tested at over 120amps IIRC, the wiring is not that bad.

I would advise you get your alternator rebuilt and upgraded at any local alternator/starter rebuild shop over buying a used FD alternator, the money saved in shipping can be used towards this.
