Unhappy Alternator help please!?

ok so i just got an 88 twin turbo it has fifty thousand miles on it. the car sat and was turned on every once in awhile for about five years in illinois. so anyway i was driving it for the third time and my alternator belt broke off it was realy old i didnt think anything of it and replaced it then that one broke off aswell this pissed me off. so i got a new belt and put it on again and then drove around the block then poped my hood so see if i could see any problems i found my alternator extreamly hot then i noticed the other belt (found on the road) had traces on it of being burnt. what does this mean the engine isnt hot at all just the alternator. my clutch is acting realy screwey as well im going to try to see if tighting it helps or not tomarow. its way to late to try anything tonight to. but any help would be greatly apreciated im going to start troubleshooting tomarow but i dont even know where to start. i dont have any money to get a new alternator please tell me its not blown. thanks in advance for you help. the "EXACT" same thing happened to my friends FC 2 days ago. he broke 2 belts in like 2 days and on the 3rd we found we couldn't even touch the pulley after it idled for 5 mins. we replaced that alternator and now it's fine.

the pulley itself could be screwed. make sure that you have the deflection alright. when it gets really hot does it make alot of noise. your voltage regulator could be bad. check your battery. a weak battery will overload your alternator. the best bet would be to take it to a shop and get them to test it.

Ya have to find out sooner or later, so.....

T2 dosen't mean Twin Turbo.

All second gen turbo 7's are single turbo.

You can take your alternator to any parts store and have it tested. Their tests don't always show you if the voltage regulator is dead (ask me how I know) but they will tell you if it's charging right. If it's a replacement, you might have a warrenty if you can prove where you got it.
Check the output voltage with you meter when it's running.

No you didn't.

Sounds like classical symptoms of a bad alternator. Alternators with bad rectifiers or shorted windings will get VERY hot and put lots of stress on the belt.

my clutch is acting realy screwey as well im going to try to see if tighting it helps or not tomarow.
Define "screwy". There is really no way to "adjust" the clutch as it is hydraulically operated. The only thing you can adjust is the pedal freeplay, which probably isn't causing your problem.

i dont have any money to get a new alternator please tell me its not blown. thanks
Then sorry to say, but you should have not bought the car. If it has been sitting, then you're looking at replacing a lot of stuff (which may or may not include the engine).

I think Aaron nailed it pretty good, but it also sounds like the alt is either mis-aligned or the belt was too tight, and caused the bearings in the alt to overheat

alright ill just have to not drive the car for awhile while i try to make some money then. anyway my clutch. ok when i push in the clutch peddle the clutch rattles as if the plates hit each other. or something. at a stop sign last night while the clutch was poped and as i was sitting there i could not get the car back into gear pushing the pedel in did absolutly nothing. once i had decided to walk i turned on my flashers and turned off the car then in a hopless plea with chance i tried to push in the clutch and try one more time while the car was off. halelua it worked like a dream shifted fine i had about three miles to go till i was home when i got to my dirvway same problem arose again. so i turned off the car then back on it worked fine. what does this mean. iv never even heard of something like that happening even with a hydrolic clutch. can anybody help me here im lost and i can do this work myself im a good learner and i have friends who can help but i need to know where to start and thank all you guys for your help so far.

and finaly this is my dream car even if i have to drop a new engine in it im never getting rid of it i love it. its in realy good shape just these couple problems to get over. and yes actualy 58785 miles on the car original. my other 89 gxl has 50010 original im the only owner other than my mom but its never been driven by anybody other than my mother and i.

rattleing? and you pumped the clutch to get rid of it?
did you check the clutch fluid level?

when i was buying my 7 the guy told me among other things that it needed a new clutch, turns out it just needed some fluid in the resavore, a little bleeding and 5 min of pumping and volla, i drove home

the clutch resavore is up against the firewall on the dirversside, sortof next to the brakebooster/mastercylinder

You may have a bad pilot or throwout bearing. More than likely pilot bearing since it will "fix itself" once you turn the car off.

If you get more and more grinding noises as time wears on (especially if its when you push the clutch to the floor), be prepared to take your tranny out and replace some bearings.

Or.. Maybe it just needs to be bled

First of all, bleed the clutch before doing anything else.

Id put redline mt90 in your tranny, make sure the clutch resivour is full and then bleed the clutch system. After you're done bleeding, make sure the clutch resivour isnt low on fluid again.

An easy way to tell if you have a bad throw out bearing is put the car in neutral w/ it running and release the clutch. Standing outside the car you can hear a whirling noise (kinda) if its bad. I cant really describe it.

it sounds like a definite pilot bearing problem. It's probably going out due to sitting so long, corrosion might have set in on the rollers.

btw, it's reservoir guys.

alright gentlmen i went oline and found a new clutch for 106$ thats not nearly as much as my alternator and if im going to take the time and effort to get to that bearing i figure i might as well replace the whole clutch while im under thier. what do you think worth it or not.

Not hard to prove it's the throwout bearing. Idle the car. Open the hood. By hook or crook, reach back there and lightly(I said lightly) push back on the clutch fork. Noise increases/decreases.....it's the throwout bearing.

By all means buy the clutch disk, plate, throwout bearing and pilot bearing. study up on how to remove the pilot bearing.
