Alternator

So I've searched and only ever seen someone say fd alt or taurus alt. The fd alt would be self explanatory, but what year taurus alt do you use for a s4 upgrade? Do you switch the harness plug to whatever alt you go to? All that is left on the front of my motor is water pump and alt, but my motor didn't come with the alt on it, so will the v belt pulley from PS or ac pumps work for the alt upgrade? Is there a specific belt needed for just water pump and alt? I've searched aND only got that I can use an fd or taurus alt. And I can't find if another pulley would even work. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Just use a S5 or a FD alternator. You wont need to much more amps unless your running a big sound system. Or what you can do is try and find a shop around you that rebuilds alternators and maybe bump up the output on yours. As for the belt is that you can buy a dual alternator pulley and two belts so your water pump doesn't slip at high RPMs. Pulleys & Belts (86-91 RX-7)

Oh and as for the connectors you will have to splice in a new one for the alternator that you swap (if you do choose another one)

You have an S4?

Before going down this road, you need to verify that your electrical system is up to snuff. S4 is notorious for electrical system glitches. Big difference between S5 and S4.

Does your S4 alt put out 14.1 volts at idle on cold start up?

If not, you won't get full benefit from any upgrade. You may get *no* benefit at all.

If you've searched and come up with the word taurus, then you have all the details available you need. No need to start a new thread. Try to keep it on one of those threads so future searchers find less fragmented information. Ask questions, you'll get lots of support from guys who are experienced and interested in the subject.

And with all due respect to the guy with 3 posts giving you advice: Rewound alternators for higher amperage is a crap way to go on any car, but for our platform it is particularly poor idea. Too many details to discuss and it bores me. This 'easy fix' isn't a fix, it's a rabbit hole.

Good luck

The motor was out of the car, and without an alternator when I bought it. I plan to clean up all the grounds and charging cable. That is why I'm asking about whether the v belt pulley off the other accessories will work on an alternator. But now that I know of the dual belt pulley I guess I can run almost any alt that fits. And also on the hits I got, it just said taurus alt, not what years work for it.

Really what we are talking about is a Ford 3G alternator. This alternator type is frankly one strongest OEM alternators and is the most widely used alternator to upgrade on many many platforms. 3G is used on many Ford applications with many different mounting styles. They all have the same internals and mostly the same plug. I found the original 3G from a Taurus. I adapted this alternator on my 90 Vert. It has been trouble free and very very strong for 7 years now. It required fabbing an adapter that only a few people have successfully duplicated as there seems to be some luck involved. Here is the thread with all the information you could ever need: https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generati...etness-785082/

It's a lot to read, but the best iteration of the 3G is taken from a ford Contour. It is a much simpler installation.

Here is the starting post for the Contour alternator from the same thread.

https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generati.../#post11958687

Start reading at this point and you will find all the information you need, including an amazon sourced double pulley and a different plug than most other 3G. It all works very well.

If you need help and have questions, please post them to the other thread so the information is easy to find in one place for future searchers.
