ALOT of smoke when cold....?
I have been concerned with my N/A S4 smoking like a crack ***** when the engines cold, it seem to go away when it gets a quarter way up on the temp gauge.
During all this smoking fuel drips from the exhaust, not pure gas, just slightly burnt.
Am i just running a bit rich on the low end ? or is it something worse ?
Ohh its has 180k miles on it

believe me, fuel would not drip out of the exhaust. its just water that smells like exhaust
normal cars will "smoke" a little when cold b/c of condensation. a lot of fuel is injected when the engine is cold b/c its so hard for it to atomize, but is shouldnt smoke bad b/c of that
don't mean to give you bad news, but your engine is probably on the way out. have the compression checked by mazda.
does it also smoke when you rev high and then shift?
does the smoke smell sweet? or like oil or fuel?
what color is the smoke?

my recently revived engine fumigates the neighborhood if i get on it on the way out, right after I turn it on. And it smokes when I rev and shift.
Heh. Good thing I was planning for a TII swap anyway.

Guys don't go jumping the gun so quick. I'll bet this guy lives up here in the NE. Been pretty cold up here lately. So air contains a large amount of water right? What happens to air when it is cold? It becomes denser. When that air is crammed into a motor and heated the water separates from the oxygen with combustion and gets blown out the exhaust. If your car is a turbo it's even worse due to the IC cooling the air even more. If the smoke is blue or a dense white then you might have a problem. If the smoke is just a light steam and your motor is still doing it come June then you may have a problem.

If i've just started it, it smokes more as the RPM's build. The smoke is white and seems pretty dense. the smell is closer to that of fuel.
It seems to run strong, but then agian i don't have anything to compare it to.

How cold has it been outside when you are starting the car, and how cold does it normally get to during the night there?
Even here in New Mexico, it is usually 30's-40's in teh early morning during mid winter. ANY car I see smokes when they are first turned on (even my integra) and when I drive for awhile I can see the smoke even in my rear view mirror. When the car warms up, the smoke is gone.
It's just the cold air outside if it's what I think it is. Usually if the motor is on its way out, it'll be burning a LOT of oil (blue smoke).

Its been as low as 9 at night here lately (-3 with windchill). As i know all cars smoke (or steam i guess) in these temps, but i had just been concerd cuz my moms car, nor my friends Porsche had been smoking anywhere near this bad. Maybe i'm just a bit to concerned about my baby.
Maybe it just seems worse cuz of the Dual exhaust...?
EDIT: Even today with temps around 50, it still smoked a just as much. And didn't feel like steam, as it didn't leave condensation on my hand as i stuck it in the "Smoke". But what really stumps me, is after my lil joyride, and the engine was warm, no smoke, no white stuff at all, not even when revved.
This seems to be turning into a question for the rotary gods......

My car smokes like crazy when it's cold. And condensation drips from the pipes whenever I start her up. The engine has 40K on the rebuilt motor, so I know the engine is all good. I'm not worried about mine, she's been through a lot.
