that sounds like electrical contacts problems. Check the connector at the wiring harness for corrosion and the connectors on the warning lights to be sure they are not loosed. Someone write something about resoldering the warning lights to resolve that problem. I know that I need to do that. I have intermitency problem with the clock and with the stop light.

What year? Series four? Then the alternator is bad or the WHITE/black wire on the back of the alternator is shorted to gnd.

Well the series car seems to be an unknown. Oh well.

Here's how a series four idiot light cluster works. Key is put to ON. The White/Black wire on the back of the alternator puts out a GROUND signal to a relay in the CPU. That relay pulls in because it already had 12v on the other side of it's coil. The contacts in the relay *make*. One wire of that set of contacts goes to gnd. The other goes to the idiot light cluster. Now you have put a gnd on the idiot light cluster and all the lights light up.

They lit up because the alternators white/black wire was putting out a gnd signal (alternator not turning over/putting out) or because the relay in the CPU is stuck in the closed positon, or because the wiring has been fiddle fucked with and a gnd is on the wire b/t the CPU and the idiot light cluster.,

Turn the key to ON. PUll the small plug off the alternator. The idiot lights should go off. If not, then the relay is bad or there is a short on the circuit b/t the CPU and the idiot light cluster.

Yeah, that's a major problem. Rewire it.

I'd like to suggest, that if you make a typing error, that you take the few minutes it takes, to go back and correct the typo. I'm not into puzzles nor rearranging letters in a sentence to figure out what was trying to be said.

What it gets down to, is this. IF your not motivated to make sense out of what you write, I'm not motivated to make sense of it.
