Question Speedometer not working?

I recently just bought a RX7 (4/21/08) and I'm new to the rotary world. So far, I am loving my "FC3S". But when I bought it I noticed that the speedometer isn't working at all and the miles are not registering?

Is there a possible way I can fix this by myself with basic tools? or would I have to bring it to a mechanic?

One more thing, Does the power steering have to do anything with the speedometer not working? My power steering tends to go out on me and it's hard to make turns but whenever I turn my RX7 off and then turn it back on, The power steering comes back making the steering wheel alot more smoother and easy to turn.

It is cable driven. Make sure it is hooked up on your transmission and on the back of the gauge cluster. If it is hooked up, make sure that the gear in the tranny isn't messed up. If that is good check the ends of the cable for wear. If they are good, then look at replacing the gauges.

The Battery, Coolant, Oil Pressure, and Tachometer work fine.
It's the Speedometer that's not functioning at all.

I tried calling the seller but He won't answer any calls.

I'm motivated to fix this myself, I just don't know how without the knowledge.

coxxoc,

Would you happen to have any pictures to display where this cable is going from the gauge cluster and to the transmission?

On the gauge cluster, it should be one of the ones that clips onto to the back, I'm not sure which.

But on the transmission, the location for the speedometer cable is on the left rear. Follow the cable up to the firewall, it should go through under the master cylinder. Check this spot as the rubber grommet may have worn down and the cable might have broken from rubbing against the metal.

If you could post pics of the underside of the car and the engine compartment, mainly under the master cylinder, that would be much appreciated.

Dude..relatively Easy to fix...Check at the Firewall Driver's side..you will see teh speedometer cable coming out of the Firewall..Follow it DOWN to the transmission,.it hooks up onto a Screwed "nipple' sort of,on teh Driver's side of the Transmission, and is held up secure by a 10mm bolt..if the Cable is not On at the transmission,Put it on and Test Drive it..if that is NOT the problem, then you have to Go Inside teh car and remove the cluster//....Disconnect the Battery FIRST...take the Gauge Surround off. There is Screws at the Bottom by the Headlight and Wiper Switches. The Screws are the ones that are Closest to the Steering. Then there are THREE screws Up under the surround where you Look at the Speedo, and gauges.Once they are Off you can Nuzzle the Surround back and forth(side to side) and Get it out enough to Disconnect the Headlight,Turn signal, wiper and Cruise switches(maybe Rear wiper and heater also)..Once that is done, there are FOUR screws on the Gauge cluster.Undo those and you have to take the cluster and pull it out, side to side..Enough,so that you get at the Connectors,FROM THE LEFT SIDE,BEHIND THE CLUSTER..you will feel the Wires going To the Tach and there is another Connector there..They BOTH go in the Same way..Reach ONTO the Connector, you will feel a Small TAB.push it Down and Pull the connector,it will come out as a ROUND Set of wires, with Connector on it..(as it sits on PINS like a king's Crown.)..Make note of the COLOR of connector(one is Black, the other is white)..Once they are Disconnected,Reach in and undo the SPEEDO cable,by Squeezing the Tab in the white Plastic Connector..it should pull off the Cluster and OUT...NOTE:you may have to Go INTO the engine bay and Push the Cable IN,through the Firewall, just enough to get the speedo cable off,as it is a Real BITCH!....anyways that is the Removal, and Installation is the reverse!(I finally get to say that!)..Good luck.
