Airbag

Okay, so. What am I looking at to put an airbag in my 88 NA? I'm thinking I should try to find a steering wheel with on in it and switch it. That work?

I guess I would just install it as any other aftermarket airbag with the benefit of having a steering wheel and airbag that fits the car.

that makes no sence at all, what would be the purpose of having a airbag that dosnt work, its like having a NOS bottel in the back not hooked up to anything and empy. you might was well put a passenger side airbag in while your at it

what your suggesting is perhaps in need of re-thinking.

The '88s dash structure is not designed to handle a airbag deployment. You would need to convert the whole dash assembly to a series 5 car, well alone the considerable extra wiring would require a new interior harness from a 'vert, a new engine harness from the 'vert (for the front impact sensors, decel-sensor and airbag CPU).

Don't forget you would also want to add the steering column and connections.

Then you would need to modify the harness, so that all the coupe functions would work.

And if you just wanted a steering wheel with an airbag in it, you would just have an explosive device 2 feet from your face, with no trigger. sort of like driving around with a stick of dynamite in the storage bins.

why would you want one?? if I had one I'd disable it. they cause more harm to you then the crash does in most cases.

I think we all are.

Why in hell would you want a damn airbag in a sports car.
Get some better seat belts if you really want to, or get an openfaced helmet for dialy driving

That's only going to work if you carefully plan your accident out and manually fill the air bag before impact. But then it won't be an accident.

But seriously, don't worry about it, get a 4-point harness and you'll be okay.

An airbag is only inflated for a few thousands of a second, so it has to be timed - you can't just "switch it on". and if you're paying that much attention to when you're going to be in an accident, you should use that to GET THE HELL OUT OF THE WAY and AVOID an accident...

BTW since when are there "aftermarket airbags"??? Airbags aren't like seatbelts, they're designed for a specific car... and yes when they do go off they destroy the dashboard, the steering column, the side windows, etc. Not to mention the airbag itself, the airbag module, and specific parts of the wiring.

Hm, all this about airbags I didn't know.

I'm springing for the harnesses. What are some other ways to make the car safer?
