Question Air Pump Question

As we've already established, im new here (but ive been searching here for a little longer)... so please dont flame me for asking questions that im sure people have asked before. Im a newbie and i want to learn as much as i possibly can. That said...

I just recently got my 88 N/A and i have decided to get a custom exhaust jobn done involving removing of my catalytic converters. I have read that the air pump is used for emissions and if you remove the cats, the pump is no longer needed. How do i go about removing it? it looks to me its connected to the metering oil pump(i think)on the side of the engine. do i have to plug it up somehow, or what? I would like to remove it and the extra load(even if its not all that much) on my engine. As always, your replies are greatly appreciated.

you will need to have some way to actuate your auxilary ports as they will NOT work with a straight pipe situation. This means one of four things. You leave the air pump and hook that up, get an electric pump and hook that up, get a pre-silencer for your exhaust and use that for the ports to open up, get true duals.

Don't let any fools tell you to JUST wire them open. As that will only have you loosing low end and keeping what you would have if they work properly.

I thought that the air pump actuated the ports on 89 and up models... i thought i read something like that a while back, but i may be mistaken.... but im gonna go get the cat cut out today, ill just leave the pump on for now...

no no. Exhaust back pressure routed through a small line from the main cat actuates the 86-88 models(S4) with no cat you don't have that line anymore. Hence why you need to RIG the air pump UP so it works. Not just leave it there that won't do **** but make a whirring noise when you rev.

Not to get off the subject, but my air pump makes a whole hell of a lot of noise...like a whirring/vibration that is annoying as all get out. Is that normal or should I look into replacing it?

you could just drill a port somewhere in your exhaust as upstream as possible. that should have enough pressure (hopefully) to open the ports.

See this thread posted not too long ago:

if it is hooked up properly it shouldn't make any noise since it has a muffler thing up front on the passengers side.

If you need one I have a couple for sale. Send me and e-mail at aztechrotary@iluvmyrx7.com
