air pump, do i need it?

ok. i was reading the sticky 5th 6th ports thread, cuz i dont know actually where they are or how they open. anyways in the thread it says that they open from the air pump. so should i not take the pump off? i was planning on removing that, but this makes me second guess this reasoning. so i know i need a block off plate, but with it gone, am i going to get any adverse side effects?

on a 86-88 (and 89-91 Turbo only) you need it if you have emissions equipment.

On a 89-91 non-turbo you will need it to activate the aux ports and the VDI

If you have an 86-88 with no emissions then you do not need the air pump.

I think removing the airpump on a 6 port is the worst thing you can do. Unless You have electronic acutators. Removing it will rob you of so much power. If you want to do it right, keep the air pump, switch to e-fan, get and underdrive pulley and an FD Alt. If you want to save the weight, remove your spare.

On a S4 it will not affect the 6 ports. They are opend by exhaust back presusre, and there are companies like mazdatrix and racing beat that have higher flow coponents that will still oper the ports.
But on a race car would the 6 ports really matter since you would almost always be above 3800RPM?

the 6th ports would matter, but i think your point is that you don't need to worry about the actuators since you're always going to be over 3800 rpm, so you could wire them open with no issues.

I think you guys missed something in my post.

let me say again in more basic terms.

You only need the air pump if:

You have emissions

Or if you have a 89-91 non-turbo.

and another way:
If you do not have emissions you may remove the air pump and still have the aux ports work on a 86-88 non turbo, but aux ports will not work on a 89-91 non turbo with the air pump removed.

If it is straight 3in all the way through, then I doubt that there would be enough backpressure to open you aux ports.

I have seen some 86-88 non-turbos have problems opening the aux ports even with the stock cats and a free flowing 3 inch cat back.

I have a 1988 TURBO II - I removed the CATS and went w/ a straight pipe. (No emissions) Should I remove the airpump? What benefits?

None. It's just removing redundant equipment.

If I remove the airpump I was told I need block-off plates... Any idea where I can get these?

I believe that racing beat and mazdatrix have these pieces. You can also make your own.
