Air Pump---can i remove it?

never really dealt with a car that has a bunch of smog crap on it. anyways wondering if i can ditch the airpump(or at least the belt going to it), or will the car not run without it. if i can ditch it, has anyone done this and how difficult is it to remove in such a manner that i can re-install it in 2 years when i am due for smog. thanks ....

If you remove your catalytic converters, then you can remove the airpump as well. Be aware that if you have a 89+ NA, the airpump also actuates the 5th and 6th port valves, as well as the VDI so you will have to figure out how to make them work. In that case, you might as well just leave the pump on.

If you have an '86, you will need to figure out how to make the 5th and 6th ports open since they operate by exhaust backpressure. Normal solution is to connect them to the air pump.

But no, there aren't any side effects to removing the pump if you don't have any cats. HOWEVER, I would HIGHLY recommend you get a dual belt alternator pully and install a 2nd belt on the alternator. Without the belt from the airpump, only the alternator belt remains to turn the water pump. It has a tendency to slip at high speeds, negativly effecting water flow. This could cause overheating.

One thing to look out for, this is not really a big deal but to me it is now, without the air pump your engine bay will make more noise. I have one of those k&n air filters on my airpump hose and it makes an annoying noise under the hood, but will not hurt anything. Kinda wish i kept mine on now just because of that.

Um, without the airpump your engine should technically make less noise.

I think it's the filter. Ever since i put it on there its made a deep rattling noise from that hose. With the air pump it was quiet.

I just ripped mine out today. You can ditch the two brackets that hold it on, too.

Definately don't forget the dual alt belt pulley.

What he means is that the Aux ports on the N/A are operated by air pressure. In the s4's its from exhaust backpressure, but in the s5's they are opened by air pressure from the air pump. If you remove the air pump in an s5 you need to figure out a way to operate the aux ports or you will have crappy high end power. There's various methods of doing this described elsewhere in the forum.

Why would you have to run 2 stroke oil after removing the air pump? Removing the air pump does not affect the stock oil injection system.

Nope. You should take the cats off as well they will allegedly clog quicker because there is no burning assistance from the pump. And take the ACV off to, no reason in keeping it with the other stuff gone.
