Question Air Flow Meter. mount vertically or horizontally.

Is there an advantage to having the AFM mounted vertically like this one here? Mine is mounted horizontally. To be honest mine is the only one I see like that. It seems every engine pic I see from 86-88 RX-7's have the AFM mounted vertically even though it came mounted horizontally stock. So what's the deal guys? What am I missing out on if anything??

mine is horizontal

I bought my car with the k&n high flow filter installed and the afm is mounted horizontally. I think the vertical looks better and gives you more roomon the turbo II's. I may mount mine vertically when I get my e-fan. As far as performance, I'll have to let some of the more knowledgable rotorheads answer that.

I can't take credit for that car. It's not mine, but yes it does look nice.

Snoopster, by e-fan do you mean e-ram? If so I used to have an e-ram but traded it to a buddy of mine. When you install it MAKE SURE YOU INSTALL THE SAFETY SCREEN! My buddy did not and the bolt that holds the fan on flew off into his engine and killed his #5 and #6 cylinders on his Probe GT. So make sure you install that screen. As far as performance goes, it is rated at 1psi as I'm sure you know which is good for about 11-13HP I think. Have fun with it. I had it on a 1996 Mustang GT and it did great. My buddy also noticed a good gain with it before it broke.

If you open up the mechanism and look inside you will notice the how the door opens... you should put it in the stock posistion becuase the door wont open correctly if its horiziontal...

First things first. Supergoat, is that what you mean by vertical or horizontal. I would call that vertical. That is the way not to mount your AFM. It should be mounted horizontal so the flapper door inside moves side to side. It doesn't matter whether it is upside down or not, as lon as it is horizontal. (Rightside up is with the black plastic part on top ribbed side on the bottom) I mounted mine upside down so I could get my HKS filter to work with my cold air box. If you mount the AFM vertically, then gravity plays a part in how the falpper door operates, so the ECU does not get the reading that it should. I am sure that people run theirs vertically without problems, but if you want it to be right, then go horizontal.

Talking

I mounted mine the way it is in the picture. It worked fine. Then I read a thread from ReTed saying it must be horizontal, so I rotated it 90 degrees. Here are the results.

A/F ratio light now indicates slightly richer 2000-3800 rpm (except under boost). Throttle response is a little bit smoother (no gravity fighting the flap) when you open the throttle. Other than that, no difference. And I may not even have noticed these differences if I was not watching for them.

I had to mount my AFM on ty-wraps in order to get it horizontal. I will have to make a custom bracket for it to work. The Bonez air intake mounting bracket is designed for vertical. It is super strong. IMHO, it doesn't matter a whole lot which way it is mounted. Go for the easiest way, unless it just has to be as close to perfect as possible.
