Air con help

Gidday,
I've been having a few problems with my air con. The compressor doesn't run. I've traced the problem back to the compressor relay which is earthed by the ECU. If i manually earth the relay the compressor will run. What I want to know, is there any problems in the ECU that cause it not to earth this wire? and if there is, is it easily repairable?

Thanks.
Mat.

The compressor is powered by the air cond relay. The ECU allows a negative/ground/earth signal, if there is sufficient refrigerant pressure and the local temp is above a preset level.

The only thing that the ECU monitors is the refrigerant pressure and temp and tells the supplemental fan to turn on.

So if the relay is not activating I would look at the pressure level of the refrigerant.

Yeah i was thinking the same thing, but i tried to regas the system the other day and I couldn't get the compressor to operate (I've never really had any trouble before on any other vehicle). There should be sufficient gas in it to switch the hi/low pressure sw. Ah well maybe i should manually trigger the compressor clutch when i gas it next time to fill it up, then try it.
Thanks,
Mat.

Before you start blaming the relay, you might want to check a couple other things...

As Icemark has mention, there's a pressure switch in the AC lines (in the front nose).&nbsp You might have enough refridgerant in the system, but the pressure switch might be bad.&nbsp I've seen these fail pretty regularly.

The "AC Logicon" is also a pretty common failure component, as the internal cold solder joints WILL fail 99% of the time.&nbsp This is the control "box" the controls your AC, vents, heater controls in the center console.

i'm not sure if the same problem applies to me...

My AC compressor makes a slight whining noise every couple of seconds when the engine is running. When i look at it, every time the noise varies, the compressor moves slightly faster or stops and moves slightly some more (it currently goes about 3rpms when the engine is running idle.)

When I turn on the A/C, the noise goes away as the compressor is now turning at a reasonably high speed until about 5 seconds later, the noise comes back and it is going at the 3rpms. When it does go at 3rpms, the little light above the AC swtich turns off, even if the button is activated.

I figure something is wrong with the compressor, but what is it? and how can i fix it? I have access to a hoist if required and i can usually carry out any modification work myself (and save myself a whole lot of $$$ that i dont have). Thanks, Lior.

Sounds like the compressor is failing. The seals will sometimes go if the air has not been used for a time, as the freon (R12) is mixed with an oil for lubrication purposes.

Go to your drier. It has two single blade connectors. Jumper them together to simulate a fully charged system. Turn the A/C to ON. If it was a low refrigerent problem then the thing should work now. If it does not....its another thing.

you want to rip that **** out, i did, and you would not believe how much all that stuff weighs, not to mention the huge condensor? blocking flow to the radiator. I bet i lost a good 40 lbs taking it out.
