Question afterburn during deacceleration

Hey RX brothers I am a newbie and just bought my first 88 GX. Right, straight to the problem, I have timmed it perfectly, and I still get small amount of afterburn during deaccelaration? And if my rpms don't drop to 1000 or stay at 1500 I start to get afterburn. I check all lines and no vac leaks but then again I don't even know what a vac leak looks like, lol. Next if I steadily accelarate there is a small hesitation around 4000 in every gear it feels like. So if the RX-7 think tank can help me out I sure would appreciate it.

welcome to the rotary world were afterburning is a way of life!
sound to me like your 5/6 ports arent oppening/closing properly resulting in the waky air fuel ratios that cause afterburn. fix your 5/6 ports (plenty of threads on this board) and if the problem doesnt go away dont kill yourself over it as long as the engine is running smoothly otherwise. its kinda the nature of the beast for older/modded rx7s to have afterburn issues and many of the dozens of little things that add up and cause the problem just arent worth bothering with unless the engine is running poorly because of them.

can you check your 5th and 6th ports by just revving your engine, rathe than going out for a drive? My transmission is dead, but in the meantime i want to do maintainence

you can check to see if they rotate, just reach down there (might have to remove the intake hose to get a good grip) and try to spin them, if you can and they pop back to resting position after you rotate them then you know they can spin....

then the question is if the actuators are working properly... which you wont really be able to check without putting load on the engine (ie driving)

another way to check is by taking the solenoid out of the path between the airpump and actuators this way you can get them to open in your driveway. then you can rig up a test lite and go far a drive to see if the signal comes on at 3800rpm.

thats seems too complictaed, Ill just put grease on them and look at it when im done driving. I need to get a new transmission firsta nd i'm in the process of that, i'm dropping the current one tomorrow and taking it to be rebuilt.
