AFM reroute(S4)

ive read that you can plumb the afm into your intercooler piping and was wondering (on the flapper style) is there any specific place it needs to go? i know that it needs to be level but heard that on boosted cars it dosnt really matter being that its forced air moving through it.

the AFM is supposed to be before the turbo.

This is done often. Sometimes after a turbo upgrade there's no space to place the AFM before the turbo, so logically it then goes into the intercooler piping.

Personally I'm not a big fan of this since the AFM was never really designed to hold positive pressure, and the higher temp of pressurized air may effect the temperature sensor inside.

However I've never heard of one actually popping apart due to pressure, and some people report better throttle response having it closer to the throttle body.

It should only ever be relocated to inbetween the intercooler and TB.

Not true at all, the S4 AFM still needs to be as level as practical. Air is being "forced" through the AFM no matter where it's located.

In the past it made perfect sense. This was a common mod before aftermarket programmable EFI become cheap and readily available. With big turbo upgrades and stock ECU's, the AFM simply didn't fit pre-turbo. Given that you still need some sort of fuel control to make this work (it'll run very lean otherwise), there is simply no need to do it any more. If you can't fit the AFM in front of the turbo, your turbo is big enough to make an aftermarket EMS a far smarter move.

Post intercooler temps should not be high enough to damage the AFM. If they are, you're doing something wrong.
