AFM Reading on S-AFCII during startup...

Hey guys.

Should the AFM reading on my AFC move from 0 percent when starting?
I'm still trying to diagnose my engine problems... car starts, revs to 3K then shuts off unless I give her 25 percent + throttle. No vac. leaks... so I dunno.

I can hear the AFM moving (S5) when I crank it as each rotor sucks in air... so I know its moving, but the reading on the AFC never moves.

The AFM checks out just fine when I take it out and read the resistance values. It makes a clean ohm reading sweeping when I manually move the "thing" inside... I have not read the voltages at the ECU (yeah wayne.. i know.. it was a long day).

Damn this thing...

With the key to ON.....shove your afm's valve with your hand. Sorry I have never seen a series five afm. Shove on its cone in a aft direction while looking at your SAFC when the SAFC is in the SENSOR CHECK positoin. Did the reading for AF1 do anything when you move the cone?? Did it read anything prior to shoving the cone inwards?????

It should have. On a series four, if you move the flap in a aft direction, the SAFC sensor voltage will rise. The same should be true if in the monitor mode and looking at the afm position.

If there is no voltage reading when you move the cone.....I'd say the SAFC ain't wired right.

I've checked the AFC's wiring... it's spliced in perfectly, all connections soldered.

I've tried searching... about the whole start up to 3K, immediate shut off delima. I can't get much related as I don't know how to shorten these symptoms down short enough for the search to actually work...

Anywho, I'll try this when I go to work in the morning. Car's at the shop still.

Sounds like your AFM type is set wrong.

Should be either 4 in 4 out, or 5 in 5 out. I think its 5 in 5 out for S5s..

5 in/5 out for S4's.
6 in/6 out for S5's.

Ok...

Throttle is set to "**"
AFM is set to flap, 6 in 6 out

I get no throttle reading either.

When I do a sensor check, it shows the TPS at 4.8 volts or so. This is with it unplugged. That's normal since failsafe is 100 percent I guess. BUT, even when I plug it in... it still reads the same, even if I have a friend push the plungers in and out. This is a new TPS I got from a forum member... said to be good. Don't have my multimeter here, so I cant check to see if its good

I really hope I don't have to mess with all the wiring again. I already had to fix it from the previous owner... so I "made sure" it was right.... checked which wires to go into 3 times, and then soldered all connections.

Thanks guys,
Jon

It's wired wrong or the SAFC has gone **** up.

If the tps is being used, then the throttle reading should be 1volt when the car is fully warmed up. On a stock thermowax intact car, the reading for tps may be in the 1.60 plus range when cold but return to 1volt when fully warmed up.

I know what I'd do right away. I'd go to the ECU and put the meter on the input wire from the TPS and see what the voltage was. Then step on the throttle and verify the voltage goes up when the pedal is depressed.

The same with the afm's output. Go to the ECU and put a meter on the afms output to the ECU and verify that the voltage rises when the afm's plunger is forced back into the afm.

When you say you had the tps disconnected and the voltage was 4something or other, and was the same with it connected.......that makes one think the SAFC is wired assbackwards. Done.

well, I'm not going to rule that out
I have been know to.... ahem.... hook some **** up *** backwards.

Ok, got a starting point to look at... have to do it tuesday when I get back into town.
