advice on rebuilding

Im going to start rebuilding my S4 TII engine right after Xmas. The person I bought the car from provided a complete rebuild kit, and has the corner, side and apex seals installed on the rotors already(springs are not in yet as they gotta be installed after the rotor is in the housing)

I have printed the engine section of the FSM and have reviewed it several times so Im familiar with what needs to happen during the build and checking clearences. Ohh, I am an auto tech also, but this is the first rotary I will be building.

I want some suggestions and advice on what to watch for. Tips to help make this process smoother ect ect.

Mind you, this is a basic rebuild and not for all out performance, just to have a complete running engine i nthe car so I can drive and enjoy it oncethe weather breaks. I plan on dropping in a strong performance built engine later this year and Ill post some ideas I have for that at a later date.

So please, share your knowledge with me as I prepare to step into this rebuild.

hmm.. well first off i wouldn't be putting the springs in while the rotors are in the housing, that's a pain in the ***. you do that only with the corner seals. completely set the rotors up before install.

make sure you get all your berings in place under the front cover, it sounds stupid but i almost forgot one and would have fucked my motor, and make sure you use the right o ring on the oil passage under the front cover or it will not seal correctly, also when you put the oil pump gear and eccentric gear on with the chain, line the keyway in the oil pump first, then take the keyway out of the eccentric shaft, this will allow the gear on the eccentric to rotate freely while you set the oil pump gear in place on the keyway, be very carefull when putting it on the oil pump or the keyway fall out very easily, once both gears are in place, spin to the eccentric shaft gear to line up the keyway and put it back in. this should installation of the oil pump gear, eccentric shaft gear and chain alot easier. i hope thats understandable

lol, very understandable. Thanks much. Im hoping to create a small page showing my progress as I put back together this car. I got all the parts and a rolling chassis. ITs all there, and in great shape. I just need to reassemble it. I like challenges and this is going to be a fun one for me.

So I picked up all the underhood stuff yesterday and man do I feel a bit overwhelmed lol. I just need time to go through it all and get things in order. I have 2 complete, unasembled engines that I will be rebuilding. I have to check all the clearences on the 2nd one, but the first one was checked by the previous owner and all ready for reassemble.

Ill create some sort of page to highlight my rebuild and post a link in the rebuild thread. If I have anymore questions Ill post.

We literally just had a topic two days ago with this very question. A search for "rebuild advice" will probably turn it up. This has also been extensively covered in the past and there are Archived threads with a lot of info.

Actually, I think putting the apex springs in after its in the housings is the method described in the RA rebuild video.

Aaron would you be talking about this thread: https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generation-specific-1986-1992-17/i-need-tips-first-rebuild-601303/
(bookmarked)
To the original poster, you are sort of in the same position I am with having a shell and almost 2 complete motors to put together, must be a Pittsburgh thing. Good luck with the rebuild and if you need an extra hand or two hit me up.

lol yeah must be a burgh thing. Im hoping to be starting soon with putting this engine back together. I have some plans on building another engine with a mix of FC FD and RENESIS parts sometime next year.

I still need to rebuild half the harnesses and reinstall every interior piece in the shell also. Long long long winter build for me here lol.

i put the springs in the apex seal slots after the rotors are in the housing, in my opinion the reverse is a pain in the ***... why do you think installing them after is more difficult?
