i poked a bit around more at the wiring diagram for the fan control unit, and it doesn’t look like it actually controls the fan. The relay you are missing is controlled by the electrical sub fan relay. That relay is controlled by the temp switch, and the ECU, directly linked to the refrigerant pressure switch.
Near as I can tell, that control unit only activates the warning lights.
if both of those relays are in place, the system should run as per stock.
I got a relay, Wired it up according to the wiring manual so it should be mimicking the oem relay. Turned on the car, let it warm up.. nothing. going to double check all my connections to make sure there's no user error, but so far, the new relay test isn't successful. Will report back once I get a chance to double check all connections and try again.

Also, what would be the typical time to wait for operating temperature? Manual says that switch should activate at 207f I waited about 5 minutes which should be plenty - considering it's still 90f here in AZ at this time of night. Now I'm questioning if I should have waited even longer? Pretty sure it should have been at operating temperature by then though.

Do you have a meter? They're affordable, and super useful in this situation
Did you try shorting the relay?

you can also connect the temperature switch wire directly to ground to trigger the relay

Unfortunately I don't have a meter yet. Yes, they are affordable, but when you just had a kid and are saving to buy our second home, it's a hard sell to buy anything for my "toy" at the moment (according to wife), lol.

I have friends with one, near by - maybe I'll borrow it to test with for the time being.

I re-checked all my wires and everything looked good and connected where they should be. I did another test with the car, let it idle for close to 10 minutes, still nothing. I tried connecting the temp switch wire directly to ground like you suggested and the fan spun! So what does that tell me? the water temp switch is not working? And what's with the "Refrigerant Pressure Switch"? I'm going back to some of the original messages posted on this thread (now that I have a better idea of what I'm looking at) and I'm seeing that it may be a factor at play? I'm going to research that now.

Also, also...

I'm just now seeing this "Electrical Fan SUB Relay" in the diagram that you had mentioned in the previous post. Sorry, it takes me a minute to make sense of everything I'm looking at. Okay so now I feel confident that is what I'm missing... now I just need to find where that is located. Any pointers? I'm going to check the manual in the meantime in case that picture is clear enough to point me in the right direction.

It doesn’t make sense that grounding out the temp
switch caused the fan to run if you don’t have the fan relay installed

Sorry, maybe I didn't describe it properly. What I meant to say was I had the relay installed as it should be, then got the ground from the relay and grounded that to the car, so basically testing the relay to see if it activated the fan. Basically what you were suggesting me to try, and the test results worked.

Its really up to you how you want the fan to operate. I figured you were going for “stockish” since you bought the mating oem plug for your fan instead of just snipping it off and crimping on a deutsch or weatherpack.

basically, tell me exactly what you want to happen and I can try my best to make it super easy and less intrusive/destructive/reversible to make this thing run. Do you want the fan to operate any time you have the a/c on, regardless of coolant temperature? Do you want it to run like stock? Do you want it to run like an S5? Do you want to get a new relay, or use a stock one?

i really am trying to help you, and i know your end goal, but its kind of vague as to how you want to get there.

Thanks so much for taking the time to really help me out here, I really appreciate it.

My end goal is to run like stock, considering all the wiring is already in place (minus some relays). I wouldn't mind just having it on all the time since I'm in AZ and when I drive it, I drive it with AC on all the time anyway, but would like to at least try to get the stock functionality working as my first attempt. If I can't get it working like stock (without continuing to drop more and more money), then I'll just wire it to always be on as a last resort - but with your help, it looks like I'm almost there!

So the latest information is that I figured out how to read the wiring diagram to help point me in the right direction to look for that second Electrical Fan Sub Relay and I found 2 connectors in that area. One of which looks promising and I thought I had found it, until I started to look at wiring colors compared to what the diagram says.

so Y = Yellow, that stands out. Next to it, it should be Blue and Orange? Looks like black with a yellow stripe.
Then below it I should see Green with Red and Green with Blue? Doesn't look right to me so I guess that's not it...

So that's where I'm currently at with it. Trying to not stress out on it too much, this is a hobby after all. Just never really had to deal with wiring before so I'm trying to learn how to properly read the manuals.

Okay wait, scratch that, I found it!

So that puppy is already connected to a relay I believe (since it's got that sleeve covering it), so if that's already in place, then both needed relays should have already been in line and worked?

Ok, so right off the bat, that is the wrong plug for AC-05. You can tell right away because the plug shape doesn’t match- Mazda was REALLY good with matching their plug shape to the manual pictures.
Both the fan relay plugs should be at the front of the car, to the right of the hood latch.

So since I found the relay and assume its not working. I think the easier thing for me to try (and possibly final solution) is to do a permanent jumper on the Sub Relay. If this works, it should mean that the temp sensor will still affect the fan and it should ignore the Sub Relay. Thoughts on this?

So I tried to bypass the second relay (by jumping G/L to G/R) and let the car idle to temperature and still nothing. At this point, I wonder if my temp sensor isn't working properly... My dashboard shows proper temperature on the stock gauge, but not sure if that's working off of a different sensor or not, either way, I think I'm going to now finally settle for the always on solution by putting a permanent jumper on that first relay spot so it always turns on with ignition. As I've said before, I live in AZ and when I drive the rx7, it's always with AC on anyway so a bit of extra air wont hurt . Also, I'm not on a stock alternator. I think that's the end of this (unless anybody gives me final thoughts that lead me to dive into this again). Thanks so much for everyone's help!

Thanks for everyone's input on this, I'm considering the same approach on my s4 convertible which does not have the additional fan. I do not have the temp sensor in the housing, but I have another housing from a T2 that I'm going to try to use. My T2 does have the fan.

I know I'm a year late to the party, but if I make any additional discoveries not previously mentioned, I'll post back.
