ABS/non-ABS

Another quick one:

Are the master cylinders (neglecting brakeline connections) fully interchangeable between an ABS and non-ABS system?

The brake boosters that they bolt to seem to be different (per FSM).
eg. the non-ABS booster protrudes an extra inch or so from the firewall and I was hoping to not have trouble swapping the lines and master cylinders while doing my conversion this weekend.

Can anybody whos done the conversion offer some insight?

The master for non-ABS is the EXACT same as for the ABS brake system. The ABS box changes pressures in itself and to the wheels, but the master is the same.

hmmm, the master from non-ABS sure seems to have 3 outputs as compared to the ABS version's 2.... or were you just the part that bolts to the booster is the same?

On my left shoulder....

There are two ways that you can do this. Mazdatrix sells a ABS elimination kit which is basically a box to loop the existing lines together. Your other option is to buy a non-ABS master cylinder and non-ABS brake lines (two front wheels. one to the back of the car). The pipes and the new master cylinder probably won't run much more than $100. This is the way that I went BTW (I did't trust looped lines for high speed hard braking).
sounds like they are interchangeable

You DO need the brake booster. I did the same thing on my 89 TII. If you replace the ABS master cylinder with the non ABS, you will need to replace the brake booster as well. The mounting points don't match up, nor does the plunger. Just grab the booster off the same car you got the rest of the stuff from.

Clarification please

The abs/non-abs master cylinders are different.

ABS: fluid comes out the side of the cylinder, goes to the proportioning valve. One of the lines from the proportioning valve (bottom marked "F") goes to the end of the master cylinder and stops there. The other line marked "F" and the line marked "R" go to the ABS unit.

Non-abs: fluid comes out the side of the cylinder, goes to the proportioning valve. The same line goes from the place marked "F" to the end of the master cylinder, and then continues through a passage to the front driver's caliper. The other line marked "F" goes to the passenger's side front caliper. The line marked "R" goes along the frame rail under the car to both rear calipers.

EDIT: this is true for S4 cars, not sure on the S5

Holy hell!
where is Kevin when you need him?

i KNOW that the cylinders are not interchangeable... I was the one who corrected Falcoms

As per my FIRST post, the question is: Can I put the non-ABS cylinder on the ABS brake booster (given that i'm using the non-ABS lines as well)?
I know the cylinders feed different lines.... I'm prepared for that.
But, do they work from eachothers brake boosters?

Am I not making any sense here?
