i actually just installed pop up headlight bulbs with projector lenses in them. they take an H4 Bulb that plugs into the stock harness. i really like them, also i installed a set of 8500K Xenon Bulbs and i get 40% more lighting on low beams. These lenses, you dont have to replace the entire housing when you blow a bulb, just replace the little H4 bulb. saves on money...
Here are some pics of mine:

You're losing light with any blue-tinted bulbs, especially in foul weather. Try a quality standard bulb of the same power rating, you'll see a definite improvement. The whiter color is just fooling you into thinking they are brighter than standard bulbs...they aren't.
8500K is just a color rating - and such a high color is low on lumens (actual light the human eye can see) compared to say a 4000K or 6000K color.

If we're talking REAL HID's, color temp matters more. Ideal color temp is in the 4000K - 6000K range. Anything higher and you're losing real-light for more color (more blue/purple). This is why all the ultra-cheap HID kits on ebay are 8500K-10,000K in color (they aren't made very well and haveless light output than lower temps). However, there are loads of good ebay vendors selling some decent kits with a 6000K color temp ($225 usually).
If you went with a real HID conversion, those housings you have would have to go. They look like they'd glare a LOT and might really disturb other drivers. I had a Hella offroad housing and a 6K kit on my FC before I sold her...once aimed properly, I didn't get any comments when driving behind friends etc...

Where did you get those? The only place I have seen these conversion kits is on ebay, and they all have a little gay blue light at the bottom, I don't want that crap. And bubbly centers...
