As for original questioner.... is your vert automatic? That would drastically cut down on the acceleration and torque you lay down and I would say yes, compare you to a focus... the low torque of the rotary at low rpms is the only thing I hate about my car.
When was the car's last tuneup? If you had no exhaust back pressure that would kill a lot of torque. If you are in an s5 then your ports may be stuck along with not ativating.. You should be able to feel vdi at approx 5200rpm, aux ports at 3800. Considering the vdi accounted for half of the 20hp diff in s4s and s5s... that stuff is a pretty big things.
