'90 GTUs - tell me what you think..

Hey there

I'm about to buy a '90 GTUs with 211k on the chassis (not that many mi. on the engine, i dont know how many are on the engine but less than 211k). It's pretty much in perfect condition cept its smokes a lot out of the exhaust until it gets warmed up, then it pretty much runs fine. Anyways I'm gunna buy it for about $1500 prolly. I just wanted to get everyone's opinion on it. My plan is to buy a motor at a pick & pull and drop that in there. That should fix it I think.

Any suggestions or opinions on weather I should take it? Thanks

If you can varify it to be a real '90 GTUs, $1500 is a steal.

$1500 for a up N/A with over 200k on the chassis and may possibly have coolant seals failing.. yea great deal Yea GTUs is a nice car, but really not "worth" much/any more than a regular FC. And pulling a rotary out of a junkyard and planning it to be in good running condition isnt exactly the smartest thing either. If the exterior and interior are near mint, I would say go for it, but please consider getting a good rebuild done by a experienced rotary mechanic, not some junkyard special.

yah true but a lot of times cars are junked cuz of body damage. I MIGHT be able to find a decent engine if I look hard enough. But looking into a rebuilt is another thing I'm gunna do. Is there anything else I can do for a lot of white smoke coming out of the exhaust before warming up? Also how safe is it to drive it like that for a little while (until i can get a new motor or at least a rebuilt).

One more thing -- how can I verify that it is a GTUs for sure?

GTUs will have no sunroof, no rear wiper, no power options, either red, black, or white. Have the larger brake and suspension package ( 4 piston front calipers) and had the S5 Turbo2 16' wheels. Thats the way to tell for sure, check the sticker on the door jamb to see the stock tire size. Should be 16" ( 215/55 I think?) It was the only N/A to come with 16" wheels.

THAT'S a bad coolant seal....you have to tear the engine apart to replace so u might as well rebuild the whole thing while ur at it.....when the car is cold the seal is cold and leaking coolant.....as it warms up the seal expands and the leak closes as the car cools the seal contracts and the coolant leaks until it is turned on and warmed up.

you could always try that CRC block weld. i know of a few people who have done it with good results. it's not forever but it buys time. just don't follow the directions on the bottle(s)

^ that... is awesome.

I wouldn't even bother trying to find a motor at a junk-yard... It might even be LESS of a hassle to just pull the one out of your car, take it apart and rebuild it. You'd gain experience and you'd have a a MUCH fresher setup than an 'unknown condition' junk-yard motor. Go for the rebuild!
Don't waste your time and effort on a gamble.

A few things -

First off I ended up buying the car tonight, Second I was mistaken its an '89 GTUs not a '90 (stupid me misheard him on the fone). Third, I got it for $1350.

I decided I'm just gunna rebuilt it. The side seals are gone and I think thats it. But since I'm gunna pull it out, I'm just gunna rebuilt the mother ****** anyways -- it's worth it if the motor is already out, like you guys said.

Finally, it's got 211k on the chaissis. Think it was a good deal? I feel like it was a steal for a GTUs even if it's not a '90.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks

it's always nice when someone pops into your thread and goes "wow i got my stuff alot cheaper and in nicer condition" and implying that paying more that dirt for something makes you an idiot. if it's worth it to you then its worth it. 1350 bucks for a nice chassis minus an engine isn't a crime of a price by any means, esp. if you can appreciate the gtus for yourself. sounds good to me.

Let's put it this way -- I'm definitely extremely happy with my purchase
