it could be clogged up a little. Either the cats are clogged, or you should run some fuel injector cleaner through it. If when it happens that light comes on and it cuts out, it could be the oil metering pump, but I don't think that should make it smoke. Mine didn't smoke when my omp went out, but it could be that.

Interesting - I think I had the same problem, but not recently. Can someone tell me why the OMP would cause this to happen?

I have had the situation where the car will start just fine after sitting outside all night on a cold morning. It will drive just fine until it starts warming up. Then, when the temp needle starts moving up, the car will act like he mentioned above: you step on the gas and the car stumbles like it is getting no fuel. It will then stall. To start it requires pressing the gas pedal to the floor and, after a few minutes of trying, it will start very roughly and make tons of smoke. Last winter, this happened every time I left the car out of the garage when it was cold out. It didn't happen at all when the car is in the garage or if it is warm out (e.g., above about 40 degrees). It hasn't happened at all this year, making me believe that whatever the problem is, it has corrected itself.

Also, of interest, this was on an 89 convertible with about 15,000 miles on it.

Any ideas?

Dave

I really don't know why the omp would make it smoke like that and require you to floor it...when mine went out, it was an intermittent problem. Anyway, yeah, the OMP's are WAY expensive. I can't really think of what it could be though...it still may be your omp if it's shot really badly. Well, I hope the best for ya! Just let me know if you have any more questions...I may not be able to tell you much, but at least I can sympathize!

hey i havent been able to test i for sure to find out this is the problem they are common to go out on the 89 though.Wht causesit to smoke is imay be wrong but this i what i figure by reading the 89 mazda manual and a little bit of research on it the omp mixes the gas and oil well it also has a position sensor on it that allows it to dump oil into the motor when its first started so it has compression thats why you have to floor it when the omp is going bad when wot it resets the omp an dumps more oil to get the compression needed to start mine is a manual pump and i have to floor it everytime to start but its a manual pump if i dont floor it it will then flood and i know my injectors arent leaking because there brand new i think on mine the problem is the 89 intake on a 88 which has a metering rod instead of electric so the rod is know all bent up to fit on the 89 intake and why it smokes is that the omp is going in and out sometimes dumping oil and someties to much which then inturn causes it to smoke now dont quote me on this for this is justmy little mechanical brain trying to figure this thing out. this is a very expensive part $1502.87 so im trying to figure this thing out so i am 100% sure this is the problem thanks for everyones help,Dave
