89 Turbo II starts then stops
Hey
I live in Belfast, I'm writing this in Dublin and my Dad bought a Turbo II in London.
It was a non-runner, but he got it going by feeding the fuel pump direct from the battery. He traced the problem to a faulty alarm. Now the car starts, revs to 1000rpm then cuts. It won't run as before with a direct feed to the pump.
Anyone have an idea what this could be?
There's now a real reek of petrol so if fuel is a problem then it's too much not too little. I guess the ECU might be expecting a signal from the alarm?

Whenever it does that is usually a large vacuum leak. Check the connector going to the turbo or any large hose you see disconnected. A small leak will cause a rough idle but when it start and ***** down, is usually a large leak.

thanks for that.
the car was running before dad tried to diagnose the fault with the fuel pump feed. He had to take the intake side apart a bit to get at the fuel pump resistor relay - maybe he's left something disconnected on that side.

I'm having the same problem with my 86 NA.. It's been down since november, and I haven't figured out what the hell is causing the problem. I got annoyed, and now I'm replacing all of the engine bay wiring with new, and putting in a MegaSquirt ECU... I hope your problem isn't as severe as mine

if the car isnt running to begin with why would u want to put new mods to try to make it run?...it just adds another ??? to why the car isnt running...but hey..if u got it running after u did the mods....good job....personally i think its a bad idea...try to make the car run first....then worry bout the mods
and yeah....check for leaks and cracked plastic pieces.....he might want to check the TID and various hoses around the exhaust area....probably be a good idea to make sure all the connectors are hooked up tight....

i had a problem similar when i did my tII swap and all it ended up being was the 15 amp engine fuse on the fues box in the drivers side kick panel and that i needed to adjust my idle after emissions removal from the 8mm locknut just behind the intercooler on the throttle body. just my 2 cents.......

cheers lads.
One more piece of info: as I say he got it started first time by sending a direct feed to the fuel pump. Now a new noise has appeared - when he puts that direct feed on the pump (ignition switch OFF) he can hear a hissing near the intercooler which gets louder if you press on the metal part of the 'cooler.
I'm not expecting these clues to amount to much. Just putting 'em out there to see what you guys think!
One other general point: he's found a lot of dodgy insulation on the wires around the exhaust side of the engine bay.
cheers again,
doddy

i would just say that if the fuel pump is jumped then that would be the hissing that you would hear. have you tried to jump the fuel pump (oh **** just drew a blank) connector. the little yellow one that is by the passengers side strut tower(in the us).

sheeeit.
big vacuum leak alright lads - dad took the air pump off to get a look at the intake side. Turbo hose was hanging off!!
He's in the process of unflooding it now. Looks like the £300 non-runner is about to come good :>
