89 gxl help
i am about to get a 89 gxl. i test drove it today and jsut wondering about these probs
1. engin jumps in revs between 1.5k and 2k when ideling
2. goes in to reverse sometimes, think it's the shift linkage
and heat comes from the shifter while driving as if the transmision were heating up really badly.
3. very low, low end torque, i donno if it will be caused by the air pump cuz it's missing a belt, picks up fine between 5-6k only.
4. when driving at constant speed, it jerks.
5. it's got 160k. donno how much life is left int eh engin
6. and a vibration from teh back going over 60 mi/hr
thankx for any help

Okay, i'll answer the ones I pretty much know - other gurus, please correct me if I'm wrong. Some of the questions he's asked, has happened to my car, or I already know.

but question: don't rotaries have low-end to none at all torque?

UGH! The jumping RPMs are caused by either bad compression or INTAKE/VACUUM LEAKS. No big deal, some starter fluid and alot of patience will fix that right up. If that doesnt work, then it's most like the TPS that is either misadjusted or broken. It's about a $150 part.

Check for a vac leak, and theck the TPS. Set the idle adjustment, and the variable resistor screw. If that doesnt fix the idle problem, i dont know what will. As far as the trans, check the shifter bushings, and the linkage. Oh yeah, before you buy ANY rotary powered car, run a compression test. Anything under 85PSI i would seriously think about reconsidering purchasing. Hope this helps.

hey, thankx for the help, i'll get a compression tool from my machanic and run it on it tommorow. i'm not too worried about the idle cuz i've seen alotta posts about it and adjusting the tps so if i get it, i'll prolly get that done. but it cranks up ok, take a lil while. gotta hold the crank and maybe pump gas a bit. i'll give the compresion test a try tommorw and give u an update. thankx
