88 RX-7 GTU will not start all of a sudden

First I will give you a little bit of a background on my 88 RX-7 GTU. My father-in-Law gave my wife and I this car when he moved back to Chile 2 years ago. The car was in decent shape and has not had a problem running in the past with only 80,000 miles on the Engine. The only work I have done to the car since owning it is replacing the Calipers, Pads, Machined the rotors, replaced the tires, wipers, air filter & replaced the battery.

About 2 months ago I brought some junk home in the trunk (Back open area under the glass, no trunk really ) and parked the car backwards in our drive-way which is at an angle towards the street. Well I unloaded everything out of the back and in the morning came out to go to work. Well the car wouldnt start. You can hear the ignition kicking over but nothing beyond that. So I pulled the caps off the spark plugs and grounded to the frame and they are all getting spark. Pulled the fuel line and cranked the engine over, plenty of fuel comes out. Checked the air filter and it was replaced around 3000 miles ago looking good there. So I figure I might not be getting spark from the plugs themselves. Replaced both of the leading and both of the trailing plugs on the engine with new plugs but still nothing. So what could it be? I was thinking that it could then be the injectors but would it make sense that one day they are working and the next nothing? Usually injectors will get dirty or not spray correctly but all of a sudden. What really has me stumped is that the engine isnt even cranking over or starting where it would be a timing issue. If the timing was off I would think that the car would at least start just sputter or not run worth a damn but Nadda? Anyways looking for some info from you guys to see if I can figure this out. Electrical maybe? Man talk about frustrating

Were the plugs wet(fuel) when you changed 'em out? They do love to flood.

Welcome aboard

gotta love this forum and how it works so well

First the radio does work but what would the starter have to do with this? Does all the electrical run through the starter?

The plugs were not wet when I pulled them out (But certainly a little worn & dirty). I am worried that it could have lost compression because I can hear the electrical turning over but the engine doesnt feel like it is. Weird that it would be working just fine and then all of a sudden after parking it over night it would give me nothing. Worried that if it is the compression that it would most likely mean a Apex seal that has gone out which could mean an engine replacement or rebuild.

Anyone know what else could cause a problem like this?

nonono

what i was saying is does the battery still have obvious power??? and if so does the car just not turn over...
i just went thru this myself......the battery was good and the lights would come on, but when i tried to start the car nothing would happen...no noise no crank no nothing.....the battery was good though...
thats all im saying...
if the battery is good, but the car just doesnt do ANYTHING when you turn the key, then it very well could be your starter.....
everyone says they show thier age before they go out, but that was not the case with mine.....it just stopped working one day..have you tried to push start it....that worked for me so i could get it home.....
waited a few days and tried again and it started fine....
then later that night it stopped working again...

Does the engine turn over or not? Your post was kind of confusing. When you turn the key does the tach bounce at 2-300rpm? If not, get a hammer and tap the starter a few times and try to start it again.

find the fuse box under the hood ...(located by the batery) pull the two fuses closest to the engine ... crank for a couple of minutes then replace the fuses and crank again... if its a flooding problem it should start .. if not than i dont know . but mine did the same exact thing and if it does it once it will continue till you either send your injectors in , modify your fuel pump , or wire in a fuel cut off switch like i did ..cost me about 5.99 all together.. switch ,wire connectors and wire...
