Unhappy 88' gxl, small fire under intake, help?!

I have an 88' gxl, pulled into my parking space, shut the car off, notice smoke comming from under the hood. Crap. popped the hood, smoke clears, fire ignites (small) what looks like under the intake ports connecting to the block... What do I know, not much about this. Smell of smoke was plastic/ rubber smell. no fuel ignited. So, my big question is, what am I in for here. I am ignorant about the rotary, plenty of experiance with the old datsun Z cars and not affraid to gett my hands dirty. can I do this myself and save $, or do I need to take this to a dealer? Thanx for your help.

This is more than likely it.
That, or you have shorted a very large wire and for some reason the fuse didn't pop. Very unlikely though.

wew...

thanx! I guess.... Sounds like I extinguished the fire just in time B 4 feul ignited... wew. FD does sound like the culprit, prior to fire, when starting the car, motor would pulsate till I would give it a touch on the pedal...mmmmm, Since me not knowing what to do under the hood of this thing, sounds like Im going to have it towed to a mechanic and get pinched in the wallet.. aaack.. thanx again

just pop'd the hood again to take another look at the damage.. geeze, some hoses are cooked, and part of the wires that are on the top side cooked (insulation) as well. Crap, new harness as well? Is this worth fixing?
I dont have alot of $ to put into this for this old beater, you know what I mean?

You just went through a pulsation damper fire.&nbsp If you want to even have a REMOTE chance of Mazda paying for it, file a compliant with the NTHSA with the above URL link that scathcart posted.&nbsp Hell, do it for the safety of others!&nbsp Read the WHOLE thread first before asking any more questions...
