Question 88 gxl NA, backfiring....

Having backfiring probs. I have a Bonez race pipe connefcted to an RP Online 50mm performance cat-back. The car was backfiring before I put this system opn, but it still is doing it. Will or can this damage the muflers (not sure if flames are present during backfire)? Does anyone know what may be causing the backfiring? could it be the 5th and 6th ports? PLEASE HELP!!

Yes mine is having the same problem. I want to know what the fix is. However, on mine I have a exaust leak somewhere (I don't have the funds to fix yet). I was wondering if this has to do with the leak however, it apparently doesn't since you are having the same problem. If it is the ports would a new engine work? I am completely baffled with my car however; it is going to get fixed so throw some stuff my way. Could a malfunctioning fuel pump do this, and would this cause smoke on startup that smelled like fuel? Well thanks

Same as above, getting backfiring on my 88 GXL during shifts and on high rpm throttle lifts. I'm running a hi flow cat (no pre-cats) and a cat back system. Was planning on adding a header but am concerned about the backfiring getting worse (How bad for the motor is it?). I know someone out here has had the same thing and knows how to eliminate this problem. Thanks.

You poor misguided children. All rotaries backfire when you redce backpressure on your exhaust. The less backpressure there is th more backfires you will get. It is perfectly normal.

Okay, I admit to not knowing a grteat deal about the innerworkings of motors, especially rotaries.. But isn't backfiring caused by TOO MUCH backpressure, i.e., it builds up and then BOOM? Wouldn't REDUCING backpressure reduce the chances of backfiring? I don't know...
