88 GTU 3rd gear problemS

alrighty guys, here is the issue. I was out playing with the 7 and 3rd gear seemed to go out. I pulled over and was like what the heck. Going from second to third actually put it into neutral. But if I go where third should be and then go down into neutral THEN its in neutral. If I go back up to where 3rd should be again its in neutral. Sometimes, I have to go from neutral to third and then to 4th to get into 4th (sometimes). My friend thinks its linkage. Any ideas? Thanks a lot!

update: 3rd and 4th are moving / disapering. And even at one time I coulndt go into ANY gears. Any ideas? Sometimes 4th is in the middle middle (between where 4th and 3rd should be in neutral and then neither the regular 3th and 4th work. ) Im really starting to freak out.
Someone help please, I gata drive 2 hours 2morrow by 6:00pm to seattle.

is your clutch good, also your linkage could be messed up. i think it is time for a new tranny.

clutch is PERFECTLY fine. Grabs hard in 1st, 2nd, and 5th. Grabs good also in 3rd and 4th when I can find it. I was reading up and some people have issues with the throw out bearing. Could that be it? Thanks for at least trying :0)

ok ....

I guess I will just take it to a tranny shop....

I want to make sure that I get the same small gear ratio tranny (That is special for the 88 GTU I have been told). What tranny do I need to tell them to put back in there? I dont want them to go pull one out of a 86 and have huge gears. Is there any UPGRADED tranny I can put in there? Maybe a little tuffer/lighter/better?

Thanks.
